Need help installing an electric fuel pump.

My engine builder put the wrong timing cover on my engine and now I have to use an electric fuel pump, can someone tell me what all I need to get and maybe instructions on how to hook it up. I am running a 351w with an edelbrock 1406 carb. I have never used an electric fuel pump before so I have no idea on what to look for. Thanks

I have my elec. fuel pump mounted on the inside of the frame, close to the fuel tank. Electric fuel pumps are pushers, where as the mechanical fuel pumps "pull". So you want the electric fuel pump closer to the tank.

On mine, there is just a hot wire and a ground. Run the hot wire to a switched source with key on, and I grounded my wire to frame. I also added a toggle switch to the inside of the glove box and ran it through that first so if someone tries to steal it, they will only get as far as the fuel in the bowls will take them.

They are easy to install. Mount the pump on the frame as close to the fuel tank as possible. Make sure that it is slightly lower than the tank so fuel is gravity fed to the pump. Most Pumps made today are designed to push rather than to pull fuel from the tank. Also incorperate an oil pressure safety switch when you wire the pump. It is designed to kill the pump in case there is no oil pressure should you be in an accident or have massive oil loss for one reason or another.

Do I need to install a regulator also, I have read where the Edelbrock carb needs around 6-6.5 lbs of pressure to work correctly. If I do need a regulator, where should I install it? Thanks for the information. It eill come in handy when I start installing it.

yes. or you will be pushing about 80 psi-depending on what pump you go with. I dont know if you can get a fuel pump you can adjust like that.

I picked up one of the Holley red sticker or red label pumps, can't remember what it's called exactly. Put it in the frame rail where the 2 hard lines are joined with that flex line. Had to cut the hard lines back a little on both sides and just spliced in the fuel pump with flex line. No regulator or return line required for this pump. Just ran power from the key on wire and added an interrupter switch so if I have accessories on, it doesn't pour fuel into the crank case. Only draws 2 amps, wasn't super cheap though, like 90 bucks or so. Feeds my 400 just fine, and only took like an hour to install.

It is a good idea to run a pressure regulator with a frame mounted fuel pump. I have set mine to 5.5 lbs in the past. I also put a "T" in the line and return fuel to the tank. You can put a piece of exhaust pipe in the filler line to run your return to. This helps to keep the pump cool and extend it's life.

I have the factory return line already ran so I would like to use it if possible. Has anyone used the system that summit sales that has the pump, pressure reg and volt reg all in one kit.

I got the elect. pump installed today, I hope it was ok to "T" off the supply line and put my return into it. I read a couple threads where people said thats the way theirs is done. Now if only my carb would arrive. Suppose to be here tomm. or Wednesday.http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...3&l=278b93e5b3
