I have a 95 shorty with 153,000 miles on the original 3.0l and trans. The engine runs perfect and the trans shifts fine, the only issue that I have is that when put in reverse, it doesn't hesitate, but instead goes right in with a clunk. It also is a hard shift from first into second gear. It is worse when it is cold. Will a trans fluid and filter change help to clear up this issue?
I'd say for starters, your fluid is probably old. I would start by just replacing as much of the old fluid as you can per the flush method in the sticky.
If that doesn't work, then wear and tear is probably causing the symptoms and a rebuild is in the near future.
change the vacuum modulator on the passenger side of the tranny. the neoprene diaphram breaks down from old acidic ATF and leaks. controls shift point rpm and shift firmness.
also check the vacuum tube that runs to the vac. mod. from the intake manifold vac. tree. the tubing breaks down or pulls off. replace the tube also 15 years and 150k miles old
