The guy smoking a cigarette at the opposite side of the gas pump when I'm fueling my truck or car.
It's not your option to smoke or not, it's against the law and you don't have the right to blow me up with you.
I understand it's not as easy as one might think to start an explosion with an idiot smoking a cigarette, but if you get a state that won't let you pump your own gas, it's because of jerks like you.
If you do ignite an explosion, I hope you live, and I hope you can hear the medics say that you are the worst burn victim they have ever seem and are in for many years of painful recovery.
After the pain is bearable, have a coronary.
Any open letters you want to write? Tack it on after mine.
I have heard some things about static electricity and cellphones causing explosions as well. I ever so often see people talking on their phone while fueling.
did you see the surveilence video of the guy who got ingnited at the pumps by static electricity? thats something you sort of cant prevent, and made me think weird thoughts the next time i was at the pump!

People talking on the phone while driving down the road?
I was in K-mart the other day. I saw a product in the Automotive Department called a Porta-John.
You got it, it's a plastic bag with a handful of crystals in it gauranteed to 'lock up' 28 onces of liquid. And all this time you were worried about the car next to you being distracted with a phonecall
...My buddies truck burned up because of a cell phone...had it in the bed in a gym bag, stopped off at Mcdonalds eating lunch and was wondering what the ruckus was all about with the fire trucks...
Cell phone shorted out caught the gym bag on fire which in turn caught the bed liner (drop in style)....apparently it is not all that uncommon..
actually the burning cigarette is fairly safe, something to do with content of carbon in the heater on it..similar to the old miner's helmets with the candle and carbon shields......
just as long as he dosen't light it up while he's refuelling
I've seen a demo during a fire dept haz-mat course where they douse a burning cigarette in a jar of gasoline the thing to be concerned about is the various bells and buzzers in some models of cars.
Did you tell the dingbat to put the cigarette out? That is rare, I have only seen one numbnut doing that in my 24 years of buying gas. It was some cocky young kid, and I yelled at him in front of his two girlfriends. I think he was trying to be cool in front of the girls, but ended up looking stupid.
It is my understanding that it is the vapors which are most volatile. You can see them in the summer sometimes. It is that shimmering right above the gas tank fill pipe. Granted there are less since the vapor boots have been installed, but they are still present. So any open flame is very dangerous. I saw a video of a guy torching the vapors once and it happened so fast no one could have prevented it. He was smoking. Another genius, a real Einstein.
I would have been giving the guy grief for smoking next to me at the pump, but I can be pretty vocal with strangers.
The station down the street that I frequent monitors the pumps pretty well. They will shut down pumps or not approve if they see a cell phone in use, they use the intercoms to communicate the issue. I've seen a few people get mad but the guys behind the counter don't care.
I did see a report on one of the news shows about vehicles exploding at the pump. The biggest cause listed was static electricity, and it happens most during winter. Seems that more people get back into the vehicle after starting the pump to keep warm. When you get back out there is potential for static electricity to arc as you grab the pump handle....and BOOM. Cell phones were also listed as a cause, but the static electricity thing was the biggest.
It kind of freaked me out as I am always hopping around doing things in and out of the cab during fill-ups. I have been more conscious of my actions and always touch something metal away from the pump handle first now. I know odds are in my favor but I don't want to be "that guy" on the news.
