Go .030 over on the 390. Making it a 395. Put good pistons in it. Stock rods and crank. Use a decent truck/camper cam and you will have a blast trying to keep the rubber on your rims.
Oh!! Most important thing!!! Use top notch rings!!! It makes a massive difference! Total seal gapless are good for an extra 20hp and cleaner running engine. A must have in a build

the junk yard has a 390 for 150, plus there fee for dropping it off. (id go get it my self but they are a full service place so they pull it out and bring it to you.) well anyway im thinking about buying it but just wanted to know how hard it is to rebuild a engine, i would love to give it a try. i dont have a lot of exp on working on cars like that...would it be a good first project?
We alll built our first engine once. Just get a ford motor rebuild book that covers the 390 and I'm shure if you have any questions they can be answered here
460 = gobs of easy cheap to build power but lacks super long life and keeps gas as well as a strainer does water.
FE = good to great power longer life slightly better gas mileage but has less availible lower price parts and in general is FREAKEN EXPENCIVE
i am an fe fan i love my 390 will never part with it but i do miss driving around with a huge block *former 460 driver* this is just my personal opinion and 2 bits but ...
if you want a motor for having fun on the road then build the fe if you wanna drag or haul like a diesle grab the 460.
ps there are a few places that produce new new fe blocks including all aluminum 428 blocks pricey though but just though i would mention there are new new blocks still available.
