this is going to be an extremely noob question but im about to buy a 86 bronco for cheap and i need info quick so flame if u want to.... ive worked on a cpl fords in this year range with a 302 but not a 351. the guy before me didnt know what he was doing and pulled the coil wire off and a few plug wires and tried to switch them and got confused or something but its whatever cuz his loss is my gain. my question is how do u tell if its a 351w? it looks like a 302 to me but the airbox if over the drivers side valve cover instead of over the drivers fender like im used to seeing. he says its a 351w supposedly. i cant find any stickers anywhere that states 5.0 or 5.8. also where is the coil pack because its not on the drivers valve cover like my dads 88 f150 with a 302.
he said he got it for a mud toy, its all stock. well his said when he "splashed into a hole" is sputtered and died. the airbox is clean so it didnt suck in any water. i think its just an ignition problem. what should i look for? the dizzy cap and rotor and all look pretty new. any help would be appreciated. thanks
Post up a pic of your engine. Once we can determine if its 351 or 302 we can get you the firing order and you can re-do the plug wires. That would be a good start if he admits he messed with it. It could have "splashed" into the ignition and died....instead of drying out his wires/ignition box/ect, he started messing with stuff and now it wont run...that my guess at least.
Type the VIN from the truck into this Ford Fleet Vehicle Link. Otherwise, the seventh (7th) digit of the VIN is the engine code on most Ford vehicles. I don't know how far back this holds true but the 90's models an "N" in the seventh position indicated a 302 (5.0) and an "H" indicated a 351 (5.8). Of course this assumes the engine has not been swapped by a PO.
alright. ill check it out when i get a chance. i didnt get a chance to pick it up yet cuz i ran into financial difficulties. but i doubt it goes anywhere. ill keep yall posted if i pick it up in the next cpl weeks and see if i can figure it out. one question i have is, i thought the 351s had throttle body injection? so they have ported injection just like a 302?
the 5.8 didnt get efi till 88 so i doubt its a 351w.
be aware if that bronco has an AOD its a failure waiting to happen. the 85-86 AOD's had major problems and failed a lot. Also the efi is wired different on those 2 years then on the 87+ bronco's. the airbox ontop of the motor was also only a 2 year deal. wasnt a good design and frankly is an easy change to the more current setup you are used to.
if your running into financials, its probably because this ride isnt for you. I would pass unless its just a super sweet bronco in great condition for a killer price. like below $1000
lol i can pick it up for 300 just to get it out of his yard.. and the financial issue is not a worry to me. was just a temporary downfall that will be fixed this week. so if its an 86 and has the big plenum on top its a 302?
