I am getting ready to change the steering box on my 89 F-150 and I was thinking if it would be worht my while or even possible to put a steering stabilizer on it. I do alot of driving across bumpy dirt roads and I tend to have to get my tires realigned more than I would like. So would steering stabilizers help at all? If so how much work and cost would it be to install them?
A steering stablizer is nothing more than a shock absorber bolted to a bracket on the frame and then to the steering drag link. It takes the guick shocks to the steering linkage , found in rough roads, out.
I have one on mine and like it as it tightened up the steering. Easy to install and cheap, around $40.
There are some minor differences between shocks & stabilizers, and I haven't seen a decent one for less than ~$80. It won't protect your alignment - you'll still have to get it reset occasionally, but Firestone will sell you a lifetime alignment for ~$110. Mine has already paid for itself...
