I blew out the rear in my truck (all that power from that built *cough* stock *cough* 302) so i need a new ring and pinion and bearings and all. My question is, while i got it apart should i swap in some 4.10's ($185x2) or throw some 3.55s back in ($185). i'm planning on turning some 35's in the near future and the 3.55's arent very impressive with the 31's i got now. is it worth the wait and the big bucks for the 4.10s?
I agree with the other's I'm actually chaning to 4.10's from 3.31, more power for towing and it give's me the ability to get bigger tires when it's time for them, besides the 4.10's will cost the same has the 3.55
My truck originally had 3.08's then I had them swapped for 4.10's. I ran the 4.10's with 31's for a while and now I have 33' and wish that I would have gone with 4.56's, since my truck is also my work horse. And has enclosed work trailers, Bobcats, lumber, or numerous ATV's in tow quite often. Now I am going back down to 31's to get more power back. If I were you I would go with at least 4.10's, and if you tow anything over 2,000-3,000 lbs concider going lower.
I have 4:10's and 35's on a 89 F150 4x4 supercab. Go with at least 4:10. I am considering going to 4:56's since the 4:10's are barely adequate with the near stock 302. I will be rebuilding my engine this summer adding Edelbrock heads with 1.9/1.6" valves, a Comp Cams XE256H cam, and possibly a 331 stroker kit. If this is not enough then the 4:56's will be next.

i would upgrade to the 4.10 gears. if you are anything like me if you put the stock back in, in a few months you will be wishing that you had put the lower gears in. so if you did it now it would save you money from doing it in a year for a second time. trust me you will like the 4.10s a lot better.
another option.....look in a junkyard or in classified adds for a ford 9 inch with 4.10s. chances are you can pick it up for under 200 bucks, you can sell your 8.8 abs for 300 bucks, make money off it, and have a stronger axle to boot!
