Guys I have a mid 70s model 302 with a serpentine setup on it of of what i was told was a mustang? I put a new waterpump on it and the bolt holes matched but not the water holes. I put one off of a mid 70s and everything matches the timing cover but now I'm afraid its the wrong rotation. Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this problem?
If you have a serpentine set up from a Mustang it will be reverse rotation. Does your water pump pulley ride on the smooth side of the belt? Pics would be nice.
If you got a water pump for a serpentine system you should be good as far as I know all serpentine systems are counter rotation. When I put one on mine, I just bought a water pump for the year truck the serpentine system came from.

True but since its not stock it could have a serp belt but have a standard rotation pump. You are correct that it would not come off a stock vehicle like this but I've seen it done many times even on a Mustang that had a reverse rotation pump. If you are removing a bunch of accessories such as air pump, AC, PS etc, its a lot easier to just go to a standard rotation pump but stick with serpentine belt. Thats why I asked if the pump ran on the smooth side of the belt to verify that this had not been done. These trucks tend to normally have less accesories that an 80s/90s Mustang.
I just went through all of this and found the solution.
On 5.0 and 5.8 motors using a mechanical fuel pump the water passages on the timing cover are made for standard rotation waterpumps. The later model engines with fuel injection in cars and trucks have water passages on the timing cover for reverse rotation.
The early 5.0's with serpentine and mechanical fuel pumps did run a standard rotation pump, but the water pump turned reverse. This could cause cavitation at higher highway speeds.
If you look up the waterpump for a 79 mustang 5.0 the casing is identical to the waterpump casing up to 95 ford F-150. The 79 will be forward rotation and the 95 will be reverse rotation. Get the 95 waterpump. Look at the plate on the back of the pump. Instead of it having oblong holes on each end, it will have a circle on each end. This waterpump will work correctly with the proper flow and no cavitation on the early model motors with a mechanical fuel pump.
The circles are the only areas that match up to the openings on either timing cover. That pump has been made universal.
The pulley on the above picture is designed for the smooth side of the belt to ride on. The way it is in the picture is incorrect and may walk off the pulley. By going with the pump that has the circles you can run the belt correctly with reverse rotation on the pump.
I will try to get some pics asap tom maybe that will help. I have a 302 out of a 1982 bronco and the water pump is a bigger cast iron the others are smaller and not cast iron?
This is a picture I pulled from an image search. This is what I am told the replacement water pumps look like for the 83 to 95 models. Looking at the part stores web pictures they do not look this way. The best thing to do is go to one and check them. Maybe print this picture to compare. note the circles for the water passage.
Ok looks like I may have to change the timimg cover then. The water pump that fits is the smaller housing. Maybe when I get the pics up tom then it will help ya see. Getting confused and need the truck asap! ha
