Winter is Coming, Are You Snow Plow Prepared?

All-New 2015 Ford F-150 Debuts with Snow Plow Option

While we haven’t received the white raven from the Citadel telling us winter is here, if there’s one thing we learned from Ned Stark before he lost his head was that winter is coming. While it still might be 90° where you’re at, before long the temperatures will drop and the snow will fly. Maybe you got a new pickup truck over the summer and are looking for ways to make money with it? If you bought a F-150 with the snow-plow prep package, you are off to a great start.

Remember the F-150 can be configured for snow plow use from the factory, and the preparation setup from Ford only costs $50 to add it to your build. If I were buying a V8-powered F-150, I’d spring for the prep package. Now is about the time I’d be looking to score a plow for the upcoming season.

Earlier this year I attended the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis and checked out the snow plow manufacturers. I found myself in the BOSS booth and saw they had a new product for this year. Unlike the single blade that was used in the past, and part of the snow plow demonstration Ford did last year, they have something new.

V Series Plow

The HTX V-Plow series is designed for half-ton trucks, and give you tons more versatility with the V-plow design. It’s smart in a lot of ways, including a guard to catch the snow in the middle of the V, and enclosed hydraulics to protect the system from the elements.

Plus, I can vouch for the LED lights being really freaking bright!

If you’re new to the world of plowing snow, I covered how to pick the right snow plow in a story that you can read here. There are many different snow plow manufacturers out there, and it’s always a good idea to do some research before picking the one you want.

Rocking a snow plow with a Super Duty gives you a lot more options in terms of plows and accessories, since Super Duty pickups can handle the stresses of snow plowing on a regular basis easier. But if you’re in the F-150 and looking to make sure your driveway — and some of your friends’ driveways — stay clear this winter, the F-150 can handle the job and BOSS is a company that offers a plow specific to that application.

For those who don’t remember, the snow plow prep package on the F-150 makes it easy to add a plow. The snow plow button even disables non-essential systems to provide more power to the plow. While you still have to have the plow hardware installed, the prep kit handles some of the electronics for you.

Do you plow with your truck, or are you planning on giving it a shot this winter? Let us know your experiences in the comments below or over in our forums!
