Mustang Mach-E Nets Cash Back While Stealing Tesla Market Share

Mustang Mach-E

Have you experienced a delay in getting your Mustang Mach-E? Well, you may be eligible for financial compensation.

The Mustang Mach-E has had a rocky launch. First were the screaming Mustang fans claiming an electric crossover doesn’t deserve the Mustang moniker. Calling a GT500 a Mustang that is fine, apparently, but an SUV that you plug into the wall was a bridge too far. Then came  delivery delays due to last-minute quality issues. But now the Mach-E is here and putting up a hell of a fight. Just ask the folks at Tesla; as reported by Ford Authority, the Mach-E is already stealing EV market share from Elon Musk’s pet project.

In its first full month of sales, Ford sold 3,739 Mach-Es. 70 percent of those Mach-E sales were from buyers who were new to the Ford brand. Tesla is headed the other way. They saw their market share drop from 81 percent of the EV market to 69 percent. The Mach-E accounted most of that loss, while electric vehicle sales continue their upward trend. In February, the overall EV market jumped up by 104.9 percent. However, Tesla saw only a modest 5.4 percent increase. Tesla is still the leader in EV sales. They sold 21,550 units last month, versus 9,527 from all other automakers combined. Although Ford and other automakers are closing in quick. Tesla was nearly uncontested for years, but they have real competition now. The Mach-E may not be what people think of when they hear Mustang, but it will likely be a hit for Ford.

Product success is good news for Ford and its fans, but early Mach-E adopters have faced frustrating delays. Ford recognized this and, per another Ford Authority report, is making it up to customers, going beyond just a token free keychain. Cash is king and that is exactly what Ford is offering.

“Quality is a top priority. For Mustang Mach-E customers who have experienced delays receiving their vehicles, we are providing an additional 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging on the FordPass Charging Network,” the automaker said in a statement. “This applies to approximately 4,500 customers, including about 1,500 of whom have already received their Mach-E. In addition, Ford will provide $1,000 toward the purchase of a Mustang Mach-E for approximately 150 customers who have experienced more than one delay due to quality checks.” We think that is a solid gesture on the part of Ford.

Ford will be sending out emails to buyers who have experienced delays with the Mach-E delivery informing owners of the $1,000 cashback incentive when they take delivery of the vehicle at their local dealer. If the owner has already taken delivery, Ford provides a phone number for owners to call to take advantage of the discount. It’s not every day you wake up to an email giving you $1,000. At least not one that doesn’t require you first send money to a Nigerian prince. The 250 kilowatts of free fast DC charging is in addition to the 250 kW provided at the time of purchase. Owners will have to use Electrify America’s FordPass Charging Network to take advantage of this free charging, however. To activate the free charging, owners must first download the FordPass app, activate their Mach-E’s modem, and visit Ford’s connected services page.

Mach-E Charging

So, let us sum this up. The Mach-E used the sacred Mustang name and then was significantly delayed. However, it is now selling like hotcakes, and eroding Tesla market share. In addition, people that were impacted by the delays are getting a substantial amount of cash and free charging. Seems like Ford is on the right track.
