Is It Really Worth $65K to Transform Your Super Duty Into a Raptor That Isn’t a Good Off-Roader?

The Super Duty based MegaRexx MegaRaptor is perhaps the most ridiculous truck on earth, but for some, that’s worth the exorbitant cost.

We’re lucky enough to live in a world (and a country, specifically) where we can pretty much go out and buy anything we want, at least to a degree. This means that if you can afford it, you can purchase vehicles ranging from exotics to over-the-top trucks, as well as massive haulers with capabilities that, well, we may never even come close to reaching. Many tend to make fun of these “mall crawlers” while others love them, as they fulfill their desire to be seen or even admired. The Ford Super Duty based MegaRexx MegaRaptor is one such machine, but there are quite a few reasons why it’s worth wondering – is this machine worth the $65k or so it takes to purchase one, not including the cost of the donor truck?

MegaRexx has certainly made waves in the automotive world since launching its first Super Duty Raptor of sorts years ago, but that’s what happens when you build and sell something that’s perhaps the most audacious truck on earth. As if a regular Super Duty isn’t already big enough, the MegaRexx cranks things up to 11 with new body panels that make it a whopping 17 inches wider than stock, as well as around 12 inches wider than an F-150 Raptor – a vehicle that already essentially takes up an entire, conventional parking space with little room to spare.

Those ultra-wide fenders make room for a set of gigantic 46-inch Michelin tires straight from the military’s Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, and thanks to a 4.5-inch lift kit and those huge pieces of rubber, it also rides a mile high – above just about anything else on the road – and looks quite comical when parked next to things like, say, a regular old F-150. However, there are things that the MegaRaptor doesn’t have that one might find surprising.

While many Raptor clones out there go to great lengths to replicate or even improve upon that off-roader’s suspension setup, that isn’t the case here. Granted, there are some upgrades – Fox 2.0-inch remote reservoir shocks, Carli springs, larger radius arms, Icon dual steering stabilizers, and an adjustable track bar – but MegaRexx insists that the MegaRaptor is essentially just “functional rolling art,” albeit a piece of eye candy that can also tow a considerable 18,500 pounds, too.

Regardless, the MegaRaptor wasn’t designed to be an off-roader, interestingly enough. “You can’t compare it to a Ford Raptor or Raptor R, it doesn’t have that kind of suspension,” MegaRexx founder and CEO Aaron Richardet explained to Motor Authority in a recent interview. “Its primary function is to work and tow while looking aggressive. It’s form and function, pull a BobCat or big trailer while looking cool. It’s a rolling statement.”

Though its Power Stroke diesel is left stock and retains its factory warranty, it’s also worth noting that the MegaRaptor doesn’t come with any sort of supplemental coverage, meaning that one is on the hook if they do anything silly, though Richard notes that “I’ll take care of any issues as long as you aren’t being dumb,” which is reassuring. However, it also begs the question – is all of this worth an extra $65k over the cost of a regular old Super Duty, meaning that you’re dishing out roughly $150k to bring one home?

After all, we’re talking about a show piece of sorts, a truck that’s capable of hauling just about anything, though it’s horrifically inefficient (around 12 mpg if you’re lucky), not capable off-road, and not a real Raptor. The MegaRaptor is so wide that it doesn’t fit in a regular parking space, isn’t exactly what you’d want to drive through tight urban areas, or even a drive-thru to get a late night snack.

Thus, for the vast majority of us, it’s simply impossible to justify buying this mammoth, ego-stroking machine, but then again, the MegaRaptor isn’t designed for everyone – it exists as a way for those with the means and the desire to show off – a rich person’s toy, if you will – and in that case, it certainly checks all of the requisite boxes. This is a truck that’s virtually guaranteed to tower over everything else on the road, and look pretty darn awesome doing it – even if it won’t be winning any desert races – and for some, that’s more than good enough to justify the high price of entry.
