‘Ford Trucks’ Member Selling 1999 F-450 Fontaine Towing Setup
F-450 has a custom bed that makes connecting a gooseneck trailer much easier.
When Ford launched the Super Duty as its own model in 1999, the F-450 was one of the additions to the lineup. This model was offered along with the F-550 as a chassis cab model, so it came with a bare rear frame. Buyers would add a work box, dump setup, flatbed or whatever else was needed to make the most of the Super Duty’s capabilities.
The downside to the F-450 was that it didn’t come with a bed, so if you wanted to buy one of these Super Duty chassis cab trucks for somewhat normal truck use, you would have to first visit an upfitter. Most upfitters don’t offer actual beds, but the folks at Fontaine transformed the early F-450 into a fully functional pickup.
Those trucks are fairly rare, but “RPMRon” has listed one for sale in the forum marketplace that is in amazing condition inside and out. If you want an early Super Duty to pull a heavy trailer, this might be the perfect truck.

Fontaine Bed Package
The Fontaine bed on this Ford F-450 is designed to make towing with a gooseneck trailer easier in every way. The V-shaped notch in the tailgate allows you to back up to the trailer without getting out to open the tailgate. Once you have the hitch over the ball, the Fontaine bed has low sides for easy access to the coupler. With a traditional truck bed, it is nearly impossible to reach the coupler latch when standing next to the truck, forcing most people to stand on the rear tire or climb into the bed.
When trimming the sides of this bed, your automatically lose some cargo capacity, so the Fontaine kit recesses the wheel humps into the bed a bit, freeing up a little more room to load larger objects. The result is a bed that will actually carry some boxes or lumber when you are not towing, while making towing a whole lot easier as well.
Spotless for the Age
There are some spots on this truck that aren’t 100% perfect, but for a truck that is 21 years old with more than 80,000 miles, it looks incredible. While some interior bits are new, the entire cabin looks factory fresh.
The body looks like it could use a good detailing and maybe a bit of fiberglass touch-up work around the rear bumper, but this F-450 looks like it would make the perfect race hauler for anyone pulling a gooseneck trailer to the track next season.
This 1999 Ford F-450 Fontaine truck is listed in the Marketplace for $20,000. To some people, that might seem high for a 21-year-old truck, but considering the condition, mileage and rarity of this vehicle, it is probably the best price you will find for such an example.
