FTE Forums: Let's Hear it For the Work Trucks!

There’s nothing quite like a stripped-down work truck to get the job done.

Like anyone else, we get excited about high-dollar, high-performance, high-luxury Ford trucks like the Platinum series, the King Ranch edition, or the mighty Raptor. It’s all too easy to forget about the stripped-down, back-to-basics work trucks that keep America moving every day.

One of our members, 7.3F350, is looking to replace his aging work truck with a newer model. He wants a no-frills, basic, honest-to-goodness work truck. He doesn’t want or need heated leather seats, in-vehicle Wi-Fi, or Sync. The only luxuries he wants are cruise control and power windows and door locks.

He started a thread looking for information and advice, and we’re happy to report that tons of hard-working XL fans came out of the digital woodwork to help. A few showed off their trucks, and some were even happy to share window stickers to help make sense of the myriad option packages available for the XL trucks.

To start with, 7.3F350 is looking for a truck with the XL Value Package, which includes cruise control, and the Power Equipment Group, which would give him power windows and locks. One member, Crabbman P, points out that the STX trim will come with those features, as well as some added bonuses like Sync.

Although it may not be exactly what he wants, sometimes the package discounts (Crabbman P mentions a $3,000 rebate) can work out in his favor, making the additional upgrades almost “free” compared to an XL with the options he specified. Another member, flatlander2441, showed off his beautiful red Super Duty plow rig with just an AM/FM radio and an option he coveted, a manual transfer case.

Joe T suggests that a hands-free phone option makes a huge difference in safety, and we’re inclined to agree. Bluetooth is definitely a worthwhile option in our book. Y2kW57 adds that on new trucks, Sync and Bluetooth would actually be included in the XL Value Package, making it a great choice for 7.3F350’s new rig.

Another member, tibadoe, shared an picture of his silver 2017 Super Duty that he ordered as a tow rig with no frills. As much as we love the plush luxury and high-tech features on some of the other trucks out there, we can appreciate a nice back-to-basics work truck.
