Ford’s F-350 Super Duty TREMOR is a Factory-Warrantied Monster Truck (Official Ford Truck Enthusiasts Review)

By -

With over 1,000 ft.-lbs. of torque, thoughtful engineering, and a perfect stance, the F-350 Super Duty TREMOR can do everything.

(Except ride smoothly.)

I hear it before I see it. The 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel V8 chumming at just over idle as Ford’s fleet rep angles into our driveway. The drive itself is double-wide and comfortably accommodates six full-sized cars. Today, a Velocity Blue Super Duty takes up what feels like two-thirds of the concrete real estate. Towering above my largest ride, a 19-foot-long Buick Roadmaster wagon. (Although with its 360-degree cameras, you can tuck this truck against a wall with ease.)

Ford’s been kind enough to supply this F-350 TREMOR on my daughter’s fifth birthday. She falls in love with every car I borrow for reviews, but in her heart, she’s a truck girl.

And her jaw drops with a gasp at the sight of it.

For a five-year-old, the Tremor must feel a bit like a jungle gym you can drive. “Daddy, can we go to Home Depot?” she asks, before swinging open the doors and climbing up into this monstrosity. Then it’s time to explore the optional Tough Bed bedliner, integrated tailgate step, and LED lighting.

All are immensely popular, for the record.

Tremor Off-Road Package

Outside of a revised 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Diesel — more on this below — the big news for the 2020+ Super Duty is the availability of the TREMOR Off Road Package on SRW 4×4 Crew Cab F-250 and F-350 Ford trucks. You need to order it with the 7.3L “Godzilla” gasser OR the aforementioned 6.7L Deisel, but just-under four grand gets you a lot of goodies, including:

  • 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires (LT285/75R18E AT)
  • Low gloss black 18″ wheels
  • Skid plates
  • Off-road-tuned front and rear suspension components
  • Custom 1.7-inch twin-tube dampers
  • Selectable Rock Crawl and Trail Control modes
  • 8-way power driver’s seat

The idea here is simple. Instead of buying a new truck and chucking out a bunch of parts so you can swap in beefy, aftermarket components, you’re ready to forge rivers and crawl rocks right off the showroom floor.

And everything includes the 3-year / 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Much like the power packages you’ll see on a Mustang GT, the TREMOR off-road package offers a ton of value (and time saved) for anyone who wants a factory-warrantied monster truck.

Stance

Along those lines, TREMOR-equipped Super Duty F-350s look so freakin’ badass. Tall and stout. Muscular and menacing. Rugged and simple. This beast of a truck is taller than almost everything on the road. Seriously, you’ll be making eye contact with truckers and looking down at the relatively puny F-150. (Which, of course, is already akin to the size of 1990s-era F-350s, but I digress.)

Over the course of FTE’s loan, I pay extra attention to the trucks in my area. So many owners build their Ford trucks to look, effectively, just like this. Granted, many also go for wheel n’ tire packages that aren’t street legal, but still, this truck looks the part right out of the box.

The only thing I don’t love about this particular loaner is the chrome package. I’ve seen other TREMORs with paint-matched bumpers and a blacked-out grille, and that’s how I’d spec mine as well.

Power

2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty TREMOR Review

The third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Diesel costs a pretty penny — a $10.5 option over the base engine, $8 grand more than the Godzilla — and some of our forum members are wary about owning the 6.7 own out of warranty. But this engine also boasts a class-leading 475 horsepower and 1,050 ft.-lbs. of torque.

That’s not a typo, friends.

For anyone who has never had the great fortune to drive a modern 6.7L Power Stroke, it’s an incredible experience. (It might even be one of the best Ford engines ever made, but that’s a debate for another day.) It’s a touch slow at tip-in — I think first gear on the new 10-speed auto may be a little too tall — but drop the pedal, listen to the turbo swirl, and this 7,481 lb metal box surges forward like a mid-sized sports sedan. It’s not Shelby-fast, mind you. But this thing puts most family haulers to shame.

And you can’t tow 20,000 lbs with a minivan. Or even an F-150.

That’s right, the GCWR towing capacity of a 6.7L equipped SRW 4×4 Crew Cab is 30,000lbs, allowing you to tow up to 20,000 lbs. Or, if you opt for the fifth-wheel, you can haul up to 22,000 lbs.

If you’re job or weekend adventures require hauling heavy gear or towing, I can’t imagine a better truck than a Super Duty for your needs.
