Ford F-150 Was the Most Popular Used Vehicle in the U.S. Once Again
The Ford F-150 isn’t just one half of the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for decades – it’s pretty popular on the used market, too.
Along with its F-Series stablemate – the Super Duty – the Ford F-150 has been America’s best-selling vehicle for decades now, a streak that doesn’t seem likely to end anytime soon. Thus, it should come as no surprise to learn that the Ford F-150 is also America’s preferred used vehicle, as the pickup has accounted for more used sales in the U.S. over the past few years than any other model. Automotive data outfit iSeeCars crunches these numbers for us every year after analyzing millions of listings and transactions, crowning the Ford F-150 the most popular used vehicle in the U.S. in both 2021 and 2022, and now, that streak has extended to 2023, too.
In 2023, the Ford F-150 accounted for 3.3 percent of all used vehicle sales in the U.S., which ranked it ahead of the second-place Chevy Silverado 1500 at 2.6 percent. The F-150’s other chief rival – the Ram 1500 – slipped from third place to fourth this year at 2.1 percent, just behind the Chevy Traverse, with which it swapped places year-over-year. Otherwise, this list is largely dominated by crossovers, SUVs, and hybrids, which are all popular targets among used vehicle shoppers these days for some obvious reasons. To come up with these results, iSeeCars analyzed over 9.2 million used car sales from the last five model years (2018 – 2022). Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within each metro area and state.
“Trucks have been so dominant in the U.S. market for so long that it’s strange to see the Ram lose its top-three ranking, even to an SUV as popular as the Chevrolet Equinox,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “This shift reflects the jump in gas prices during 2023, which led many consumers to move away from large trucks and SUVs and into smaller, more fuel-efficient models. With new and used car prices skyrocketing in recent years, many car buyers are seeking the best value for their money.”
In terms of used trucks, specifically, the Ford F-150 unsurprisingly topped the rankings once again by accounting for 21.9 percent of all sales in the U.S. last year, beating out the Chevy Silverado (17.7 percent), Ram 1500 (14 percent), Toyota Tacoma (9.1 percent), and GMC Sierra 1500 (8.1 percent), and it was the most popular used vehicle in 34 out of 50 U.S. states in 2023, to boot – capping off what is another dominant year in the automotive market – both from a used and new standpoint.
