Ford F-150 Hybrid Shockingly Beats F-150 Raptor in Drag Race
The Raptor used to be the pinnacle of F-150 performance, but now, the Ford F-150 hybrid holds that crown.
For quite a few years now, the Ford F-150 Raptor has represented the pinnacle of the iconic model’s lineup in a number of ways. It’s been the most capable off-road, of course, but it has also been the best performer on the pavement in terms of straight-line performance, for the most part. However, many were puzzled when Ford curiously decided to launch the all-new third-generation F-150 Raptor with the same output as its predecessor. At the same time, the automaker also launched the Ford F-150 hybrid, which adds an electric motor to its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, making massive power and apparently crowning it as the new straight line champ in the lineup, according to Edmunds.
Edmunds recently tested a trio of new trucks including the Ford F-150 hybrid, Tremor, and Raptor, all of which are equipped with some version of the automaker’s twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The Tremor makes do with the regular version, which cranks out 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, while the F-150 Raptor utilizes the high-output variant that generates 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The Ford F-150 hybrid and its electric power assist splits that difference with 430 horsepower, but makes a whopping 570 pound-feet of twist.
All of these trucks utilize the same 10-speed automatic transmission, while the Tremor is the lightest at 5,521 pounds, followed by the hybrid at 5,866 pounds and the big-tired Raptor at 5,961 pounds. What’s particularly incredible, however, is that all three posted identical 0-60 times in Edmunds’ testing – 5.8 seconds – and the quarter-mile times were incredibly close as well. However, the Raptor was the slowest with an e.t. of 14.3 seconds at 92 miles-per-hour, while the Tremor and hybrid ran an identical 14.1 seconds with the former trapping at 96.9 mph and the latter at 98.1 mph.
With a higher trap speed, the F-150 hybrid was still pulling hard when it crossed the line, an impressive feat given that it isn’t a dedicated performance model by any means. Even more disappointing is the fact that the last-gen F-150 Raptor also ran a 14.3-second quarter when tested, and it posted a higher trap speed of 94.5 miles-per-hour when compared to the new model. With any luck, the forthcoming Raptor R will provide us with a bit more performance, but for now, the PowerBoost reigns supreme as the quickest F-150 in the lineup.
