Trouble shooing TBC Fault

Texastech_diesel hooked me up with a link to a site that fixes the TBC on mine....05 F350 DRW. So I went to pull my unit out and noticed the wiring was unhooked. I thought that I couldn't be lucky enough that a simple snap in of two plugs would do that trick. It didn't. TBC didn't even light up. So dug some more into it and found the 30A fuse was missing. I robbed one and the started the truck. TBC lights up and looks like it's working (haven't tested at the trailer wiring yet) but now I'm also getting a Trailer Connection error on the dash in addition to the same TBC Fault even though it powers up. Previous owner obviously had an issue and just unplugged it all. I've read and read on here about what to check and can't narrow it down. I tried to pull the codes, but for some odd reason my ODBII scanner won't find the truck

I'm going to send my TBC in to at least have them look it over, but will that also give me the Trailer Connection error I'm now seeing? Where else do I look? I've got a camping trip in the mountains of WV this weekend and really need some brakes.

Check the grounds on your trailer. I had the trailer connection issue on mine and cleaned the grounds and was good to go. It's easy and it's free

Very true Fiz. I should have stated, I just got the truck and have yet to hook up a trailer to it. It was sitting in my garage when those codes came up. Well...the TBC came up while traveling back home from buying the truck, but that was only on start up and once Reset it was good till the next start.

Check the wiring and the 7 pin in the rear. You can use a test light to check for power to 7 pin the 2 bottom terms are ground and brake. put a test light to them and hold the brake down and see if it works. Ive had a few with green cheese at the bottom 2 pins.
I also had an 05 F450 last year that had a cluster problem I swapped clusters (ford reman) and got the tbc fault every time you first started it, but trailer brakes worked and you had to clear the message every time you started it trailer on or not.

I will certainly check that. Thank you. I had to send the TBC off to get worked on today in order to get it back in time for this weekend. Fingers crossed that it was the entire problem. I did test the 7 pin today, just not for brakes. But luckily none of it was corroded.

Josh, if your ODBII port is dead, do you know if your cigar lighter is dead that replacing that fuse Lighter fuse) will also fix your ODBII port problem?

Someone told me that yesterday and sure enough the fuse was blown. Thanks for bringing that up.

On the 7-pin did you remove the connector on the back side and also
check that too? That is where they can have hidden corrosion that will
mess with you.

Just get under the rear bumper and unhook the back side connector.
After you look at it is it's clean spray with contact cleaner and then apply
some dielectric grease to sean out any moisture from the contacts.

I did not. I tried, once or twice, to get it off but it wouldn't budge. That was in the middle of changing my oil and fuel filters. So I need to certainly do that. Thanks for the reminder.

My TBC controller will be in tomorrow. I will certainly report back once I get it in.

The guys from Circuit board Medics called and said my TBC tested out fine on the bench. He said to check my power and ground. I know I had power to it, but has grouping been an issue on these? And I'll certainly take apart my 7 pin when I get home.

Also check the wiring and plug near the DS tail light where the 7-way plugs into the main harness. Has someone add an extra 7-way in the bed for a fifth wheel.

Good point. Someone has spliced in wiring for a 6 pin for a goose neck. I check it out the other day. Wasn't that bad looking but ya never know...

my TBC came in. I went to install it and noticed this single white wire with a blue strip with tape on the end hanging out by itself. It comes down from the maing harness with wire loom that everything else does. Any thoughts on what it's for or from?

I should be able to post you a wiring diagram later to night.
2005 F350 DRW I think should cover it.
