Correct Oil for V10

Recently purchased a Motorhome with a 2002 V10 engine. I had the oil changed at Camping World and asked beforehand if they knew the correct oil to use,not to insult, and the answer "we certainly do". When I picked up the MH the service order read 10-30 oil was used. I spoke with the Service Mgr and told him they used the wrong oil---that Ford manuals call for 5-20 and even the oil filler cap has 5-20 on it. He said 10-30 is the correct oil for this engine definitely. I asked him to show me proof and he was unable to produce that info.

I guess I should call Ford and ask but I thought the forum might have something to add. Is it possible for the 10-30 to hurt the V10 for 3000 miles? Does anyone now use 10-30 in one of the newer V10s.

I think Ford came up with 5-20 for environmental reasons. I don't think the 10-30 will hurt but that is just my opinion.

It won't hurt a thing. You're fine.

This lightweight 5W20 stuff is only to increase their fuel milage numbers.

5w20 oil sucks. Its too thin. I'd use 15w40.

I dissagree, 15w40 is too heavy of an oil for this engine , I would NEVER put that weight in my truck. Go with the the 10w30 if you don't want 5W20.

Correct Oil for V10

You will get a bunch of answers on this, you shoud see the same question asked on a motorcycle site.
In the end you will hear
Synthecis suck they runed my motor
Svnc's are great I go 500,000,000 miles and never touched a prat
Hevy weight sucks it will burn your motor
light oil sucks it will burn your motor

And on and on and to a man my self included don't know squat!
We only know what we believe. Now the best advice ever given to me was by a Rcrd Rep. "We have never had an oil related failure is you run the latest API rated oils that meat or exceed Fords recomendations, and change your oil on schedule."

It certainly won't hurt it, the early V-10's called for 10-30, and the newer called for 5-20, then Ford said ALL V-10's should use 5-20. But I've run 10-30 in my 98 thinking the thicker oil would be better in hotter weather, which is how it used to be. But modern oil technology is not the way it used to be. And thinner oil actually cools the engine better than the thicker oil, and in fact there's even a 0-20 out so viscosity no longer means better protection, as in the old days.

Wally World has Motorcraft 5W20 for $1.77/quart... You can also get the V-10's Motorcraft oil filter while you are there.

Cheap and easy...

Now come on guy's, This time last year everyone said 5w30 was the oil to use, so that is what I used sence then, I got a 99- 250
and I use 5w30 every 3,000 without going a mile over. Just what oil should I use? Got 54k on her now. Thanks in advance.

How cold does it get in San Antonio? I would stick with the 10w-30 if it is convienent for you to do so. I use Mobil 1 10w-30 in both my Excursion and F-250 CC SD with V-10 engines. The 10w-30 is probably more shear stable than 5w-30 in comparable oils.

Correct Oil for V10

Okay guys, to add to the confusion; I was always told to run a heavier oil in a high mileage engine. My truck has almost 90k on it. What oil viscosity is recommended. (I also live in Florida, so no severe cold temps)

BTW, I have used Castrol for years with no problems. Any comments about Castrol oil?

I have 78K on mine and still run the 5W30 Castrol with no problems. That is my oil of choice, but there are many out there. Unless your engine holds low oil pressure and knocks and taps considerably, I would stick with the 5W30.
