VIN number

Where would my VIN number be on my 56 Ford truck? What do I do if it was removed? So far I don't find it but I do have info from a wrecking yard that is now out of business that it did exist. They actually have the number on a receipt they gave me. They simply said it is not stolen come back when you finish the truck. If it has been filled and painted over do I put it on myuself?

Your Vin number

Your VIN number is on the top of the passenger side frame rail just ahead of the cab mount. It should read something like this "F10V6U31125.
The F10 means it's an F100, the V is the engine type, the 6 means its a 1956, the U means where it was built aand the last six numbers are the order it was built. 31125 means it was the 31,125 truck built.
The only other place you'll find it it on the doorjamb tag on the driver door post. If you don't have a tag on the driver door post, Mid Fifties truck parts in Golden Valley Ariz can make you a reproduction one.

53-55's have it on the front xmember as well as the frame. All the 56's I have ever come across only have it on the passenger side frame rail. They used to put it on the rear passenger rail just ahead of the rearend, but that seemed to stop in the 53-55 years.

DO NOT stamp the number yourself!!
The serial number starts with a star type indention and ends with one. Any state trooper or official will know yours is not correct and will subject your truck to seizure.
I would much rather have no number than one someone tried to stamp.
I am sure opinions will vary.
Larry
