I'm a diesel guy myself but after i bought my 3/4 ton my little brother thinks he needs one too but the IDI diesel like mine isn't to common so i found him a 89 F250 with the 460 for 1000 i've been talking to the guy and the only thing wrong engine wise is there is an exhaust leak but he didn't say where....

what are some common problems with these engines?
what should i look for before letting him buy it?
and if we do what would be some good things to look at on the first round of mantinance that's not really ordinary?

 

I had a '89 E-250 460 EFI that I ran the wheels off - strong engine though I had a nagging exhaust manifold leak that reoccurred after a complete rebuild.

I would take a good look underneath, frame, brake lines, exhaust etc...but i guess for a grand you can't have it all

 

Only common problem on a 460 is...exhaust leaks! Seriously, they're a very reliable engine-it probably needs an exhaust manifold, though.
