Welcome to FTE!

As for the MAACO question, I would have to recommend that you ask them to show you some of their work and ask them directly how much it will cost to do what you want done.

There is a reason Maaco only charges a 1/4 of a average paint job.

If you only want to spend $500, you may have to go to Earl Scheib. I was quoted $2,000 just to paint the cab on my 03 F450. And that was from a shop I tow for. It would cost almost that to do it yourself in the driveway...

I would only go to a cut rate paint shop if I was selling the truck.

X2. They are a "good" sand and shoot place if you are looking to sell and nothing else. Paint quality is poor and will bubble really quickly, sanding and body work is below par, they don't do under hoods, trunks or door jambs, masking is poor and paint gets on things it should, etc. I was selling a car a few years ago and had them paint it when they had their $200 special. Definitely not something I would have kept for myself.

A bad paint job means it'll be harder to ever repaint in the future. Changing colors from stock makes it worse. I'd prefer to buy a 'project vehicle' with fried/faded original paint that any Maaco job. Seriously.

MAACO doesn't always scrape all the bugs off first. Black is a difficult color to paint well, keep that in mind. Sure it could have fresh paint, but IMO a MAACO job would lower the vehicle's value.

Check to see if any technical colleges in your area have paint and body classes. Sometimes they like to get vehicles to train on. I had a friend that took his old Chevy pickup to one and after seeing it I thought he had taken it to one of our top end shops. It looked great.

You get what you pay for. I have a good buddy who paints cars for a Toyota dealership for a living. I asked him about repainting my truck. He couldn't even buy the paint and clearcoat for $500.00. If you really want it painted, I would try and save up some money. In most cases, if you do it right the first time, you are much happier. Good luck.

I had bought 2 taiwan repop fenders for a superduty. I had someone I knew go with me to buy the paint and materials, chemicals were $100 and the labor for paint was $100 . So, you are asking $500 about a whole truck????

Places like Maaco buy their paint in 55 gallon drums and get it for dirt cheap. Their only labor is a light sanding/scuffing and applying masking tape, so not very much there either. We used to have one here and they would routinely have a sale where they would paint any car/truck for $199. Normal price was around $350 if I remember correctly.

I have a friend that owns a body shop and he buys his paint in 55 gallon drums(basic colors) and then mixes it himself to get the factory colors. He can get 55 gallons for less than what it would cost me to buy a couple of quarts of pre mixed paint from a paint store. I imagine a place that buys as much as Maaco can get it for even less that what my friend gets it for.

<br There is NO paint system on the market that is sold in 55 gallon drums that can be made into factory colors..... Just doesnt exist... WAY TO MUCH goes into paint to get a factory match. If he has a set up like that he can get basic colors, but no way in hell could he do "factory" colors
