Are you sure the snubber is over the center of axle when it's sitting on the ground? I thought it was over the center of the axle when the springs are compressed, which is slightly forward (since the spring is anchored at the rear, and as the spring flattens, it moves the axle forward)?
I have to admit, your question got me to thinkin'. (dangerous, I know) So I went and looked at my parts truck with the front end all apart. Lo and behold, the axle bumper is slightly ahead of the spindle centerline. I had read somewhere the bumper was on the C/L so I didn't give it any nevermind. The bumper is 17 1/4" back from the forward spring bushing in the frame and is right above the center of the axle. But as the axle angles back with the caster, that places the spindle centers well behind that. I found it interesting in the Heidts instructions Old F1 posted, they show the new axle centerline at 17 1/8", which would be at least an inch or so forward of stock. Measure twice and weld once!
With the aftermarket Heidts, are they spec'ing out to have the axle further forward, for aesthetics ?
I think I remember from 5 years ago, when I was installing my IFS (not Heidts) they recommend to position their crossmember 1 1/2" ahead of stock axle centreline.
I don't know. I always thought the 48-52's had a pretty well centered tire in the wheel opening. At least on the F-1's, anyway. It's the 53-56's I felt looked half goofy there.
