Transmission problems

I have a 1998 ford F-250 light duty..

yesterday i was leaving work when i realized my truck was driving funny. It would pop into gear (drive.. its a/t) and go but when i tried to give it any throttle it would just rev and stay at the same speed..

I dont know transmissions very well and have NO clue what this would be. If someone could let me know what it might be and how i could go about fixing it that would be amazing! thanks!

Stating the obvious........ Have you checked the fluid? When was the last fluid/fillter change, and was it filled with Mercon V?

ok i cannot find the receipt.. so lets say they did not change the fluid and the truck was low on fluid causing this problem.. would the fix be as simple as adding new fluid or will i need to get the transmission opened up?

Im sorry that im being vague but i am new to the truck world.. couldnt tell you a thing about an automatic transmission if my life depended on it.

the fix could be low fluid and or a filter fluid change. you will have a dipstick for the tranny on a 98. check the fluid level with the truck running....

The truck got into the shop yesterday and he found out that the motor responsible for enabling the 4x4 had burnt out and somehow put it in 4L when the switch in the truck had stayed in 2H.

This seems stupid but im just glad that my truck isnt going to cost me an arm and a leg.

The only other thing i was wondering is, my instrument cluster fuse had gone several days prior to that and i didnt think much of it and was gunna replace the fuse when i had time to go buy some new ones.. but i looked at the fuses and the one that is burnt out is fuse number 29.. this fuse controlls :

Autolamp Module,
Instrument Cluster,
Transmission Control Switch (TCS),
Brake Warning Resistor/Diode Assembly (W/RABS)

do you think this has any relation? (regarding the TCS)

The TCS is the button at the end of the shift lever. It's used when towing to disengage the torque converter lock-up clutch. It would have no effect on the 4x4.

It's rare that a street driven 4x4 ever uses 4 Low. It's usually 2H to 4H and back to 2H again which can be done while driving at lower speeds. Most people can mistakenly put it into 4L, but have no idea how to get it back out again into 2H as they don't realize the trans has to be in neutral in order for the transfer case to function properly. Owners manuals should be read more often.ya-right
