Casa Azul

Howdy Folks,

Joaquin Suave checking in! I am the owner of Casa Azul...

She is a 1984 F700 4x4 all terrain condominium. I have just completed a 2 year bumper to bumper "extreme makeover" on her. She now sports a Cummins 6BTAA (supp'd up to >340 Hp) with dual alternators and a York air compressor, an Allison MT653, plus a bunch of other mods.

Considering the wrap-around rear window design, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it's a shortened 1947/52 Studebaker Starlight Coupe.

When introduced in 1947 (Studebaker's slogan: First by far...with a postwar car), this specific model...with its unique rear window treatment, generated all sorts of press, with people saying "which way is it going!?"

BINGO! We have a winner!

Yes, it a 1951 Champion Starlight Coupe!

Casa Azul is primarily used for "long stay" remote camping ( hard to call it camping when you can take hot showers & make ice). My girli, our 2 dogs, and I spend between a 4 and 8 weeks a year in the baja "outback" exploring.

I'll explain more about the technical aspects after she completes her "shake-down" trials.

Way cool, good to see that much creativity and adaptive reuse. Curious as to how it's licensed/titled? RV, DOT req'd due to size/weight?

I see you have grafted the bullet nosed front end onto what was the decklid.

1951: The center bullet nose is plastic, 1950 was a different shape and chrome steel.

1947/49's didn't have the bullet nose. 1952's didn't either and using a new grille design are ugly as sin...resemble an enraged beaver!

The bullet design will also be found on 1949/51 Ford passenger cars, you wanna know why?

The Deuce (Henry Ford II) didn't like the look of the new (George Walker styled) 1949 Ford, so he hired Dick Caleal to style a new one.

Caleal moonlighted while styling the car (he baked the clay model in his kitchen oven). Hs regular job was as a stylist for Raymond Loewy, who had the Studebaker contract, and styled the 1947/52's and others before/after.

It is titled as an RV.

VERY cool info Number Dummy!

I own a small industrial design/ product development company and have long revered R. Loewy's style. WAAAAAAAY out of my league!

FYI: the "studi's" headlights are marine searchlights and the grill houses dual reversible cooling fans.

Here are a few more pictures of Casa:

Casa in "camp mode"

Here is the new guage column I fab'd up.

The passenger step/ tire carrier also makes for a great BBQ prep table.
