Question Powermax GT3788VA turbo Kit anyone?

I am thinking of upgrading to the Garrett Powermax GT3788VA turbo kit from XDP. Garrett PowerMax GT3788VA Turbo Kit. Has anyone tried it? I think its the stock turbo used on the 6.0 but with a larger compressor wheel. Power figures for it seem a little high as it states it can support up to 175HP over stock. Price is $1,460 which I think is cheaper than a rebuilt OEM turbo. Anyone recommendations would be appreciated.

There is a thread over on the Diesel garage and the nation about it.
It is getting very good reviews.
I am looking to get one in a few months as well.
My review of the new Garrett Powermax Turbo - Page 3 - TheDieselGarage.com

Thanks for the Links,"Nice Work Truck", great info. Looks like tuners also have experience custom tunning this turbo! You saved me a bunch of time doing research.

69cj, harry6.0 in the first link provided by "NWT" above states: "Now when the turbo lights off, at around 2500rpm+ on accell, thats where you feel it, mid range to top end, it comes on much stronger than the stocker, but has less boost showing. In fact boost is about 4-5 lbs lower across the board in all conditions. I could only get 22 lbs max, where I was getting 26-27 with the stocker on stock tuning, but its definitely moving substantially more air, as the seat of your pants feels it."

I spent some time going thru those posts and learned a lot.

No problem, glad I could help.
If you do get one I would also get the upgraded oil lines.

I've got one sitting in the floor now ready to install on Jakes truck. I've heard nothing but good things about it and will do a little data logging with the new Dash Daq on the stock turbo before installing the GT3788VA. You can get it from OC diesel for a lot less than $1460 shipped to the house, but you might have to get on the waiting list. It is a VERY popular turbo and Garrett can't keep up with the demand.

I know of the upgraded oil return down tube for the turbo or is it something else? I am thinking of getting the regulated fuel return kit from ITP/Sinister diesel instead of upgrading the sticks in the hope the stock ones would flow more. Although Innovative Diesel recommends larger sticks (175's for towing) for this turbo. Do you know of a good place to get larger sticks?

I would say quite a bit larger. I know people that are running 190's with stock turbo's.

You can't get much more from the stock sticks even with a regulated return fuel system. The only injector guy I recommend is Ryan Casserly @ Full Force Diesel. He's using "new" injectors to build his sticks, so they are pricey, but you're not getting your "used" sticks back.

There are upgraded supply and drain lines for the turbo's. I recently posted all the new part #'s from Ford and IH for both with current prices for most of them.

What kind of power could you expect with this turbo and 175 or 190 sticks?

"rescueF250" in "powerstrokenation" thread said he had maxed out his with some of Matt's tunes. I think he was pushing about 600HP to rear wheels. Follow the links posted by " Nice Work Truc" and you find some vid's on a dyno run. Awesome.

2005 Turbo question

I was just at the Ford Dealer today, and they recommended that I buy a "ceramic coated" turbo. Is the Garrett PowerMax GT3788VA Turbo, cermaic coated?

I don't know what they are talking about. Powermax is a great turbo and a welcome improvement over the stock. It might be better to start your own thread - you'll get more replies
