REAR HUB INSTALL QUESTIONS 2001 7.3

Installed new rear hub seals on sterling 10.5 on my 2001 f350. Having an issue with the locking nut catching the threads on the end of the spindle. Does not seem like the hub is on all the way yet, thinking needs to go back further. When you install the locking nut does that drive the bearings in further?? Should the back of the hub be flush with the end of the spindle?? Have to really push to get the nut to catch. Also how do you know when to stop wrenching the locking nut? After several turns the hub seems to be very tight and difficult to spin. Did not install new bearing so book says torque to 60 ft pounds than back off a bit. What am I doing wrong??
Thanks.

I have not done this service yet, but have played with MANY bearing assemblies. As noted, Lock that Nut down good and hard, back it off, then seat it snug. \

THis should seat your bearing for you, and then by backing off, and snugging it will give you the play needed to spin freely. Make sure you are using the right grease.

Using high temp bearing grease, pinkish red like grease. Sound right? Lock nut down but looks like hub needs to go back further. Should there be a 1/4 inch gap between the end of hub and spindle lip or should hub back all the way up to lip?? Think bearing are shot, 98k on bearings, they look fine though.
Thanks.

Also what do you mean by snugging it, seat it snug?? Lock nut down and then back off like 7 clicks right?
Thanks.

Wish I had more for you as to what it should look like on this one. I dont know though.

I always set it hard, back off, then tap it in snug. I never leave on a loosen stroke.

These are a bit different to set than what I have encountered in the past, too. But they very simple to set "to spec". It takes a special nut driver, (which the O/P obviously already has from the way he's talking).

Sounds to me like you are using the correct procedure, 60 and 7.

Since you didn't change any races, they should still all be seated in their proper places.

You didn't mess with the parking brake assembly, did you?

I don't recall the space left after the bearing pre-load adjustment. Why not compare it to your other side?

Guzzle (with camodown) goes through this procedure pretty well on his website:

Seal diameter is to small, will not fit on housing snout. Seal stopping hub from seating onto snout.......Strange.

Well looks like I have a 10.5 housing with 11 1/4 hubs, have no idea why. Seals I have are wrong, to thick preventing hubs from seating correctly. Can you say confusing??

Mystery solved, and that makes sense.

Good job, and good to know about!

Thanks for closing the loop on this weird one!

For the part number of the seal I used in mine, see:
