Smile Looking for More HP for my 545 . . .

Howdy,

I’ve been lurking in FTE for about 6 years. I want to pick your brain on modifying my 454. In O6 I finished a 545 stroked 460 that I built to pull a 5th wheel with my 79 F350 Super Cab. What went into it is below & it dyno’d at 500 HP & 600+ torque up to 5,000 rpm.

Engine Build
Scat 454 rotating assembly with JE forged pistons w/33cc dish; file to fit rings; 6.7” 454 Chevy H-beam rods, 4.5” stroker crank – balanced internally – 10.5 to 1 compression
High volume oil pump w/hardened shaft
Morroso windage tray
ARP crank studs
The block was torque plate bored 30 over; the cam & crank were line honed; it was zero decked & magnafluxed.
I used Comp Cam’s Extreme Energy XE262H cam with flat tappet hydraulic lifters & Springs as a kit. I degreed the cam and put it straight up. I also used Comp Cam’s chrome molly roller rockers.
The heads are John Kasse’s super cobra jet alum heads w/72cc combustion chamber, stainless steel valves, port matched, with ARP studs.
The intake is Edlebrocks’s Air Gap RPM dual plane with a 750 Holley double pumper.
The headers are L&L’s full length headers with 2 1/2” exhaust into a magnafow 2 in, 1ea 3” out.

It’s 4 years later & I am interested in getting more power out of the engine. I’m not looking for a 900 hp racing engine but 6 or 700 hp would be nice. Basically, what cam, lifters, intake & carb combination should I be looking at?

Thanks

Jump the compression to 12 to 1, add a bigger cam and more carb.

I would only increase the camshaft size to 230-240 duration at .050.

single plane manifold and a dominator carb. custom ground sollid roller cam to match your combination. custom ground cams are not that much more (like about 25 bucks) than shelf grinds and you get a cam that works on YOUR engine (if you get it from someone who knows big block fords).

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am leaning towards the custom ground cam, single plane manifold & dominator. With the larger cam, I'll have to check piston clearances. Now to find a cam company with BB Ford expertise.

Re in"Car"nation High Performance - Products Talk to Scott, he can get you the custom ground cam. He specializes in Ford's, really likes the BBF.
