Inner Fender Mounting

This has been discussed before and I have looked at some of the other posts but have not found a good picture. I have a 52 F1, the cab is not on the frame yet and I primed my inner fenders last night and looked at how they will be mounted. I know the 51 and earlier models had a bracket welded to the frame for mounting the lower back corner, bad idea. From the discussions I have read it looks like the bracket should be welded on the lower cab mount but at this stage it is hard to line everthing up as the cab is not on the frame.
Some pictures would help of where this bracket has been relocated to.

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the mounting at the lower rear corner, its a bad idea to start with. The cab and front clip are tied together, they are spring mounted under the radiator in the front and pivoting arms at the rear cab corners allowing the whole assy to "float" a bit. So now, with the cab and clip being allowed to move a bit the go and bolt the lower rear inner fenders tight to the frame. Thats why most of the tabs are either full of stress cracks or completely torn off of any inner fender you find.

These are not the best pics in the world but you can kind of see what it looks like on a 49 truck. There is a stud on the frame that a tab from the inner fender fits over.

After I eliminated the tabs I rana self drilling screw through the lower part of the inner fender into the flange of the front cab mount to keep the rear of the inner fender from banging around loose.

The bracket was totally eliminated, not relocated. Instead there are two bolts along the rear edge of the inners that bolt to the cowl flange. The brackets on 48-51 bolted to the frame, not the cab mount.

It is my understanding that in 52 Ford just took the lower bracket off, I can’t remember if they replaced with a new cowl mounted one or not.

The original was a poor design, but just some food for thought, in those days the roads where mostly gravel washboard or dirt ruts and the drivers showed no mercy pounding the work trucks on them. In our case as the trucks are used substantially on pavement and driven with some degree of respect and if the lower mount was rubber isolated I think they would work just fine.

Not there yet but think I will try that, ……………..(just because I can).

you haven't seen me in traffic have you? LOL

Ross,
Thanks for the reminder. After I posted I thought I remembered something about the 51/52 trucks being different but I couldn't recall.
Basically on my 49, I eliminated the lower tab and mounted the inner fender like the later trucks.

Thanks, Ross your picture is what I was looking for, as it looks like you have the inner fender bolted to the lower cab mount. Did you add a bracket similar to what was on the frame or was there enough material when installed to drill through and bolt it. Maybe a closer view would help if possible. I want to have that part of the cab painted when it goes on the frame so I don't want to be welding on it.

Thanks

I'm confused; I didn't modify anything. Yours should already have all the holes it needs. The lower of the holes is near the cab support. Do you have a 48 - 51 cab, or ???

My truck is all together so I can't really get a better pic, will have to search my files when I get home.

Have a look at these guys. The inner fenders I am using are from a Saskatchewan truck and these brackets were still on the lower corner. They have been broken off both sides. My cab must have suffered the same fate years ago as it has been apart since the early 80's. Now all I have to do is line these up and weld them back on and it looks like from some pictures I took of the Saskatchewan truck they were on the lower cab mount just above the frame mounting point.

On my 52 the drivers side inner fender is bolted to the cab top and bottom. On the passenger side however the top is bolted to the cab and a middle one is bolted to the cab and a lower third one is bolted to the frame. If I recall there is a removable shield that bolts to the inner fender then it also bolts to the frame (one bolt). Kinda odd after reading this post as I have never looked at anyone elses to compare. I am going off of memory right now though. I can take some pics later tonight unless someone post them for you before hand.

There is another good point, my inners (I have 2 sets) have the panel on the passengers side as well and it apears that someone mentioned it was for removing the starter. Mine are spot welded in place, so what good is that.
