Good looking set up. I've always just slept in the back of mine, but that looks much more comfy!

In all seriousness the "tent on top of the SUV" thing looks interesting, but I'd be very concerned about trouble in high winds. Many people are only interested in being outdoors in summertime, but those things look to me like a disaster in bad storm.

I've never seen one like this before, but my mother in law has a truck tent and has used it in some nasty weather with no issues. It's enclosed on the bottom and sides, so a completely different set up, but I imagine they wouldn't sell too many if people were getting blown off of their suv.

"so a completely different setup".

That won't work for comparison purposes then, you think?

Anyhoo, just look at how high off the ground those are, and how high winds would be able to channel under the floor, to say nothing of the fly.

Sorry, I haven't been around lately, will try to get some shots for you. Regarding wind, it hasn't been an issue so far, I feel more drag at highway speeds, but that's about it.

I happened to be cruising here and saw this tent setup. I have begun to equip my 86 with gutter mounts from Thule Part #542 allowing the use of a typical gutter mount system.

Yamaha's part is "side-loader-brackets".

both available from Rack Attack - Your Car Rack and Trailer Hitch Experts

Once installed on the top you can do what you want. Re-enforcement uneath may be useful if you need to carry a bunch of weight.

These tents are the cat's meow these days....
