Question about a ZF I've found

I'm planning to do a tranny swap in my 4.9L '95 F150 4x4, from Mazda M50D to a ZF. The only small block gasser gearbox I've found so far is a ZF5-47 from a '96 F250 5.8w. Most of the swap posts I've read here use the '87-'95 ZF5-42. I understand that the 47 has a higher torque rating than the 42 (which isn't important to me). Other than that anybody know of any other differences and if they are interchangeable? The 47 has the same style concentric slave unit and gear ratios. The bell housing bolt pattern is also right . . . just wondering if it will work or should I keep looking for a 42 for some reason?

The 47 will work for you, no need to pass it up in favor of a 42.

Thanks Chad, those are good words to hear as the small block ZF trannies aren't easy to locate around here.

BTW, the M50D I'm pulling is working fine if someone in the PacNW is looking for one

Now you tell me- I just committed on a pair of parts ones I'm going to try and turn into one good one. One is good except for popping out of 5th and reverse, I'm hoping it just needs the pivot adjusted.

Jared - sorry I didn't get this info up sooner! I guess I could actually ship it anywhere if I end up shipping it at all but Idaho would have at least been reasonable freight cost.

I have an extra small block ZF in the garage i need to get rid of.

The only reason ford says these units are non-interchangeable is because they don't want you putting a 42 in place of a 47. They dont want you to kill the 42 by putting it behind a 7.3 PSD. But there is no issue with putting a 47 in place of a 42. Even though either will work for the torque ratings of any small block.

Bill, if you are looking for one that will bolt up to your V10 I ran across a beautiful rebuilt 5-47M 4x4 (modular bellhousing) during my searching here in Seattle. I think I still have the guy's contact info if that's what you are looking for . . .

I want to get one of thoes cheap when I have the chance, but I will need all the parts for the auto to stick swap and the 4R100 is still in great shape.
So that swap is a long way off. I have an 83 with a T-19 and want to swap it to a ZF-5.

Thanks though.

Post it in the marketplace section. It's a pretty active section, and a great resource here.
