vibration between 40 and 50 mph

check to see if it's drivetrain related or tire related
at 40-50 mph, turn of the O/D...or shift down into 2nd gear. this will change the RPM range you are in and can help isolate the vibration really quickly

if vibration goes away = driveshaft balance issue or maybe you need some u-joints
if vibration stays constant = tires need balancing

I had a similar problem. at 60+, my back end felt like it was vibrating. On the highway, I got up to 75 and it was really bad, shaking the steering wheel a lot. Does your vibration only happen at 40-50 mph?
I had recently gotten new tires, so I took them back and said what was up. They removed all the weights and rebalanced them for free. It fixed the problem.
Did your issue start after a recent service or repair? Like new tires?

I checked for mud, happened on my moms explorer once (I luv bein a Ford family lol) it also does it around 93 MPH but mostly noticeable at 40-50, I have the 20"s with street tires on them so Im guessing they are quite sensative to improper balancing, soon as i can ill take it to a tire shop, hopefully the hobby shop on base has their new balancer up n running, it would be cheep or even free that way

Well, I live in the desert. Just as a georaphical reference for ya.... the nearest starbucks is an hour and a half of driving litterally through the desert to get to it, good thing i dont like starbucks! If you're out on that open desert highway, and not being an A hole or doing over 100, cops usually dont mind

Hey all, I put some 20's on my 2000 Expedition and my steering vibrates at 50, but stops beyond that. I had the wheels balanced at the place I bought the rims and tires. The guy said one of two of the magnetic weights fell off, so he rebalanced them again. The vibration did not go away, so I went to Midas and had them balanced again. The vibration is still there, it begins at 50, then stabilizes when I get beyond that.

My apologies, did not realize I was posting in the wrong section. I had started to think it might be the tires myself, considering they had been balanced more than once. The other factor being that I got the rims/tires as a deal cause the tires were used. I will buy new tires and see if that fixes the issue. Thanks for the feedback.

I think I'm reading that the wheels are new. But whether new or used, one or more of them could be bent. When you balance them again, have the tech pay close attention to see if there's any runout in the wheels. The other possibility is that you have bought some bad tires since you said they were used tires. My guess is one or more tires have defects which are giving you the wheel hop. Manufacturing defects or belt separation are the primary causes of bumpy tires.
