is my FTVB killing my truck? update

a few months ago i installed a factory tech valve body and i do love it, its a million times better than my superchips crap settings. anyway im getting a clunk lately thats driving me f#cking crazy. sometimes it does it if you let off the throttle sometimes it doesnt. other times if it shifts from 1 to 2 and i let off right after it shifts to slow down or something i hear it clunk. my truck just turned 75k today and i have the original u joints. so i bought new greaseable ones and im going to install them tomorrow and im going to grease the slip joint also. so is the ftvb causing all my problems because this thing does shift like an animal! it will chirp 1 2 everytime and almost 2 3 shift on some roads??

It shouldn't on its own, but if you have it combined with boosted pressures from a chip it does put some pretty serious impact loads on the drivetrain. That will likely reduce life of u-joints and pinion gear to some degree.

I have FTVB and never get any tire chirps. Per my request, Mike did not adjust trans pressures at all on my custom tunes.

sharp shifts are nice, but not if its banging your driveline..

to much line pressure on the shifts is a good way to ruin parts..

thats what i thought, when i installed it, the thing chirps 1 2 every time sometimes it chirps on only half throttle. and now only a two months later i got this dam banging now. should i call gregg or just put the new u joints and grease the slip and see if it stops?? i've stuck because some guys say that theor truck chirps 1 2 and others say no.

I'd get a tune with STOCK tranny pressures and then replace u-joints. No sense hammering on the new ones.

The chirp is the valve in the accumulator, more of a squeal. You get it with the stock setup but it is WAY louder with the FTVB. I had the FTVB on my truck for a couple months but removed it because it didn't work with my tune to my liking. Have the stock trans now with 5 Stars custom tunes and won't go back to the FTVB. Have been told by a reliable source that Sonnex products work better with tuning than the FTVB.

my superchip was put back to stock on the tranny so thats not the problem, and second the ftvb comes with the sonnex springs plus greggs custom machined parts. im ordering my sct from mike today and after i get it and when i grease the splines and put the new u joints in todaay and it still clunks im gonna sell the ftvb and mike to redo the tunes for the tranny also. i look at it like this yes the ftvb is a thousand times better with the shifting and speed but if its gonna kill everything ill have a pro tune the truck so that the pressure are firm and fast but not destroying everything

and dkf the chirp is the tires from 1 to 2 shift, trust me i turn around and you can see two little black marks on the street after it does it, plus my cousin drove the truck past me and i see it doing it as it shifts. plus the fact that the truck slids just a little sideways at that moment

Ok I thought maybe you were talking about the accumulator chirping. When I had mine on it didn't chirp the tires from first to second but I have 33s and 3.73 gears so thats probably why. I was getting a clunk when I had my FTVB also and that why I got rid of it. My driveline is tight, the truck had 30k on it at the time and the clunk went away after the FTVB was gone. I get the impression that Gregg knows the mechanical end of the transmissions but not the tuning end. He may be using sonnex springs but what is he doing to the other compents, everything has to work together.

i dont know either, im running 285 75 16 which are almost 33 by the tape measure and 4.30 with a crap a chip and it chirps 1 2 on wot. i do know that gregg was and still is a ford tech, but i think he told me hes a boss now or something, plus he does lightings and diesel too so i hope with all the years working for ford plus all the racing stuff hi knows something. but i just ordered a custom tuned sct from mike tonight fyi he is awesome to work with talk to about tuning our trucks. plus i still have to add the new u joints and grease slip joint i didnt get to it today so hopefully when thats done all will be good. if not ill call him up

OK so last Friday i finally ordered my sct from mike and during lunch i uninstalled my 1714 super crap and a funny thing happened. when i started the truck it actually idled high and stayed there like its suppose too. first time thats happened in like two years. and the big surprise the truck actually doesn't bang and clunk when it shifts? its been five days since i tool it out and not one noise, what the f?! even with the settings on stock why would the truck clunk and bang with the chip in but now it wont? does the trucks computer bump up pressure because it see the performance increase?

Were you running the Superchips tune with just the shift firmness set to stock? Or did you reflash the truck back to the original OE stock tune? While you were running the FTVB and getting the driveline bump.

x2 for the slip yoke greasing. It's a cheap try at the least, plus it will need it anyway if you haven't done it.

I have had the FTVB for over 2 years on stock tunes (no chip or tuner) and have had no issues (50K+ miles). I can feel it "bang" into gear every now and then, but that's because I am letting off the "fuel" pedal just as the tranny is shifting.

yes i had the supercrap shift set back to stock but was still running high performance on the motor and the ftvb did not like it at all. but one good thing i got my X3 this mourning and it's awesome! the truck runs good im still trying to get use to all the new torque converter stragies that mike did. ill drive it a couple days and see how i like it. other than that i really didnt open it up yet to see how it really runs on WOT but just driving around town its like night and day.
