How much power steering fluid?

I inadvertently drained my power steering fluid while installing my red head gearbox. Oh well. What I'm not sure of is how much fluid it takes to refill the system. I have a quart on hand but wanted to know if I needed to run to the store to get more, and if so, how much.

Thanks,
Ted

I don't have a capacity listed in my Owner's Manual - I believe it was just over a 1 quart when I did mine and I let it drain for quite awhile. I even used low pressure air on the line to get as much out as I could. After you add fluid - make sure you do full turns lock to lock to bleed any air out of the system.

I'm not sure how it is on gas trucks, but on my Diesel X not one drop off Power Steering Fluid is supposed to go in there. You're supposed to use Mercon V or better...I used Mobil 1 Synthetic to when I flushed mine out last year.

Same thing on the gassers - it's transmission fluid. I'm just in the habit of referring to it in general terms as power steering fluid.

Agreed - I used Amsoil Synthetic Universal Transmission fluid in mine. Had a slight whine prior to the flush which is what prompted me to do it - not even a hint at the noise now.
