F250 clutch/transmission

I have a 2000 F250 with a 5.4 and a 5 spd. I think the clutch hydraulics are bad because while holding the pedal all the way to the floor the truck shudders and tries to move, and is difficult to downshift while moving. The shifting difficulty goes away when the engine is shut off. But it also has a tapping noise while driving around 2000 rpm. The tapping goes away with the clutch depressed. Would that be associated with the clutch problem or does this mean the transmission is also going bad? I think the clutch constantly trying to engage may have worn on the transmission, but i hope that is not the case

I was driving to work this morning and it started not shifting at all. I shut it off and put it in gear and the starter actually got the truck rolling with the clutch fully depressed. Im going to try to attack the master and slave on monday any advice would be helpful.

you can start by checking the master and seeing if you are low on fluid. Then I would be getting up under there and checking your linkage.

I almost sounds to me like a linkage problem where you think your depressing it and it really is not giving it enough to release the clutch so you can shift.

I was poking at it today and I think I may have figured something out. The clutch master cylinder feels loose. I had my dad push in the clutch and the master cylinder actually moves outward a little. Im assuming this isnt normal. Id appreciate any opinions as this may be an easier fix

yeah that is not normal. So same effect as I was saying, when you are depressing the clutch is not going far enough to disengage the clutch and the trans to allow for shifting.

Tightening that up may be the one and only cause or there may need to be some adjustments down below required, but that is a good place to start.

yeah that sounds about right. tighten them up evenly, few turns on each one. If you have any loctite to put on the threads that should help. Don't over tighten.

The hydraulics werent too bad to change. No bolts just had to turn the parts to get them out. It didnt fix it though I think its either a bent clutch fork or a sheared clutch disc. I dont have time to drop the tranny so I had to take it to a shop. Bummer

could be that with the loose master and linkage it bent the fork. Hope is doesn't hurt the wallet too bad.

Just got the verdict today. It had a couple broken fingers on the pressure plate. Also needs a new clutch fork and a clutch disc. Total bill 915 bucks. Only good news is I get it back on Monday.

kind of different. I guess that maybe some of the cause might have been the master, hard to say if that caused it all.
