93 Bronco 5.0 sending unit for fuel

My gas guage has stopped working on my 93 Bronco. I was told it is the sending unit. I checked a price at the parts store and was told the sending unit is part of the fuel pump. Is this true? It would actually make sense to replace the fuel pump if I have to drop the gas tank, but I want to be sure I don't have to buy another part as well.

yes it is part of it, but i wouldn't replace the pump...its not that hard to drop the tank... its pretty easy to tell if the sending unit is bad.. just disconnect it from the tank and ground it. if it moves the gauge needle, either when you disconnect it or ground it, it is the sending unit... pumps don't go bad that often and the are like $100 to replace so I wouldn't worry about it

On my '90 the sending unit will unbolt from the pump. They can be replaced separately, at least in my case.

I recently replaced the sending unit in my '89 351w. The pump can be taken off of the sending unit assembly, but guess what? No parts store sells them without the pump! Go figure... You can buy the in tank pump without the sending unit, but you can't buy the sending unit without the pump. In any event, I bought the whole unit from Autozone for around $100.

If you want to verify that it is the sending unit and not the guage...find the plug on the frame rail near the tank. Unplug it and take a ohm reading on the tank side. Then put fuel in the tank and take another reading. If it changes value then you know that the float is operating and may be either the guage or wiring from that point forward. Just my thoughts
