largest spare tire in stock location?

what is the largest spare tire that will fit in the stock location? I have a spare 315/70/17 tire laying around and I would like to use it but don't want to mount it in the bed...

I've measured and it looks like you could stuff a 35" tire in there, but to me it would be too close to the exhaust.

Wow! That is a good question. Tire to close to the exhaust how great of a hazard is that, I know once a tire is on fire, its intense, but could it really be ignited?

I think before it ignited it would get it hot enough to compromise the rubber, possibly even melt a hole and make it leak.

Yeah, that sounds reasonable.

From experience elsewhere; the tire will heat up and crack and harden, but not actually blow. the spare is still useable in said shape (well, *I* used it), but not for any kind of real distance.

A 35 does fit, but it is stuffed. I just used a thermal wrap with bands ti completely eliminate the heat threat.

I need to get a 35" spare under mine. It would be a pain to swap a front to the back if I blew out a back tire (limited slip differential). Plus I don't even have lug nuts for the factory spare, my wheels use the tapered style. The insulated wrap is a good idea.

I have 5 inch exhaust so the stock tire is the max that fits in there. 1/4 inch(or less) more and it will start to touch the exhaust.

Well, that's your own fault for putting in a 5" exhaust

I had a 35" under my 04 f350 diesel, but I had to remove a little bolt on L-bracket that was meant to keep it off the exhaust.
I have a 34" under my 09 f250 v-10 without having to modify anything.
