Post The Introduction and The Explanation

Hello everyone, the name's Dready. I've been looking for a place to mingle with other F150 owners so I'm trying this place out

Anyway's my rides. (click to enlarge)

1987 F-150; 2WD; EFI 4.9L I6; 4Spd w/ OD

1984 Toyota Supra; 2WD; EFI 2.8L I6; 5Spd

I got a thing for I6s haha.

Anyways about the truck. I bought it for $300 and drove it home. Had a miss. Seller said don't switch to the rear tank (crap inside), he changed the spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter but didn't go further. Didn't need the truck so got rid of it. I was the first person to respond and it's mine.

As I took it apart, I diagnosed the miss. First I yanked all the plugs and showed them to the Master Tech I work with (I work at a tire shop). He pointed out two cylinders, 5 and 6 show signs of dry firing. I now have 6 injectors I'm installing today. Then discovered two of the intake pushrods were not seated on their respective rockers. Cylinders 2 and 3 weren't getting air. I'm replacing all 12 pushrods and lifters.

That got me thinking, there's no way I drove home on 2 cylinders. But oh well. I'm home.

Siphoned gas out of both tanks, front wasn't good (going to my dad's lawnmower), but no where near as bad as rear. Siphon tubing turned black with the rear tank ha. Front tank is down and I need to replace the Sending Unit (gauge was screwy driving home). Rear tank should drop today hopefully.

The last time I drove it she smoked the entire time, which almost had me fearing a BHG, but I'm thinking now it's the ****ty gas in this truck (oil and coolant both looked great and neither level was irregular). We had an Eclipse in the shop that smoked an entire hour cause of the bad gas in it.

My parts list (stuff I haven't bought yet):
12 Push Rods; 12 Lifters; New Fuel Filter; Front Sending Unit; PCV Valve; Serp Belt; Dizzy and Rotor; Spark Plugs; Radiator Cap; Oil Drain Plug; Gasket Set.

Those are the main things I will replace before I crank it again. Other stuff will just be for the hell of it haha. If you have any advice, comments, questions or concerns please speak. Can't wait to have her running good.

I have an 88 Ford with an I-6 in it and it made an Ohio to Florida trip a few years back on 2 cylinders pulling a very large trailer full of 'home'. It needed some gas to get going but it hauled. Wonderful engines those are.

That's freaking crazy haha. I thought I knew about it's reputation but I guess I had no idea. I really need to get mine running again. Before it gets any colder out there. Gotta search around this place and see what yall have been talking about.

Thanks Itchy, gonna check that out. As far as paint, I'm not in any rush to paint it, but my father has a Mitsubishi Diamante and his 1998 F150 and they're both silver, and to see both with the same color kinda makes me want my car and truck the same as well. I was gonna repaint the Supra it's stock color (that light blue) and change the truck to that as well. But I don't know if that'll change in my head or not, cause I'm not in a rush to paint either right now.

If its me, I'd also replace the fuel pressure regulator. They eventually fail and cause problems so if you're doing a tune up anyway it might be worth it. Was your miss a constant miss or just under throttle? I had a miss / stumbling problem on my truck that turned out to be a bad fpr combined with a weak fuel pump. Took forever to diagnose. At the very least, check your fuel pressure. Especially since you're going into the tanks anyway.

Good luck and welcome.

The miss was constant. More noticeable at idle than under throttle (you could watch the engine rock less with the throttle open than when closed).

But it was a constant miss. Truck had no problem starting even with two intake valves not opening. I'm bet $5 two cylinders not getting the correct amount of air and/or two fuel injectors not firing caused the missing.

I'll look into the POR15. I'll test the FPR and get back to you. It's raining today but if it's light enough when I go outside I'm going under the truck to try and get the rear tank out. Front tank was a breeze but the rear sits higher, should be near empty and light though, just like the front was.

Thanks for the welcome. The tanks aren't salvageable in my eyes. I'm doing as much motor work each day as I can to get that back right. Gonna replace both tanks and in-tank pumps when money is right...
