F-350 Front Brake Hoses

While doing a complete brake job on my '66 F350 I was able to get everything I needed except front brake hoses. The ones I took off had brass elbows in them on the brake line end (1/8'' pipe to inverted flare) and seemed correct. I took them to a place that makes brake hoses and when I got back with the new ones the 1/8" pipe threads wouldn't thread in (close but no cigar) so I tried a brake line and it did, except it was the next size smaller and even the long fitting bottomed out and it wasn't made for inverted flare down in there anyway. So, back to brake hose shop, the guy said that it was supposed to be like that and someone had just ground the brass fittings in the old hoses. He did make me a couple of short bubble flare adapters that work but I wonder if it chokes down the flow of brake fluid since they are one size smaller. Also, in looking at some other trucks in salvage yards I haven't seen the brass fittings on them, however they have mostly been F-100s. So my question is, did the original ones have brake lines screwed into them or did they use the fittings? I would really like to get this right. Also, I noticed the front wheel cylinders only have one piston in them, could a guy put the two piston cylinders in and activate both brake shoes? Seems like that would be better, the brake shoes are made to accept them. I needed to move the truck so I haven't done the back brakes yet, I plugged the port that goes to the back brakes and am just using the fronts around the place. I'd kind of like to get the fronts like I want them before I do the rears. So, anyone with any info will be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem when i redid my brakes it wouldnt screw into the elbow, but it will screw in directly to the fitting on the steel line. I just bent it 90 degrees. I checked with the guy at auto zone and he said it was perfectly fine to do that, so i did. Its worked well so far...

I just ran into this, after finding out my hard left pull on braking was caused by an occluded right flex hose... both O'Reilly and Autozone have similar hoses in stock, but the male-threaded (wheel cylinder) end is the next diameter smaller and because it's sealed with a crush ring, there's no easy adapter. The female end on the frame has an inverted flare on the new hoses, but as you pointed out the steel line would connect directly there.

My truck ('65 F-350) also has 90 degree elbows with a pipe thread end where it screws into the hose on the frame, so I think that's original.

Green still shows 34 in stock as of today. Rock Auto allegedly has them for $9 each (Raybestos brand) so I ordered a pair... although I will not be really surprised if they turn out to be the same "almost-fit" ones at the chain stores for $14... we shall see in a few days. I'm tired of lying under it with brake fluid dripping on me anyhow

Thanks... I've found a couple other "Obsolete Ford Parts" places that also have them, most around $20 apiece, some considerably higher.

The hose that doesn't fit because the male end is too small appears to be equivalent to a C5TZ-2078 or perhaps a -2078A, for the '64-'71 F-100 and F-250. The '65 and '66 F-350 definitely require a -2078B (and I'll bet the difference is that it has the larger male end).

Yep, I've discovered over the years that there are quite a few differences between the '65-'66 F-100/250 and the F-350. The catalogs always lump together all '61-'66 but that doesn't always apply to the 350...

Just for openers, the half and 3/4-ton models got Twin I-Beam in '65, but the one-ton didn't until '67... If I'd known what a PITA it would be I'd have bought a different year 350

How do you like those lovely F350 6 lug 7.25" bolt circle wheels?

Almost as hard to find replacements as it is to locate Jimmy Hoffa, Amelia Earhart and Judge Crater, three famous 20th century "disappearing acts."

Don't even get me started on that issue Here's the short version:

I fixed 2/3 of the problem by swapping the Dana 70 with an otherwise identical 4.88 unit from a later model dually truck with 8-bolt hubs. Those 16" rims are common and inexpensive, at least.

My temporary (or so I thought at the time), and expensive, solution to the fronts was to have a local machine shop weld up the holes on a good pair of 8-hole rims and redrill/"coin" them for 6 x 7.25"! There may be a solid front axle with 8-bolt hubs that would be a bolt-in, but the modified rims are doing just fine after 11 years. I carry an original "widow-maker" spare for the front.

I still hope that the "new" Stockton Wheel might actually someday get around to making dually 6x7.25"-pattern rims. They might sell more than they think...

I've corresponded with Rock Auto and they confirm that the Raybestos hose does have the (wrong) 3/8"-24 male end, as our '65-'66 F-350's use a 7/16" male end.

They were able to cancel the order before it shipped, and will remove the F-350 entry from their catalog while they sort this out. Meanwhile, time to order the real thing

I did some more online searching while I'm waiting for the proper -2078-B hoses to arrive. I don't know if anyone's ordered from here yet, but for any hose I can think of, they either have it or can make it... no prices on the site though.
