351 Cylinder Heads

I have a set of heads I removed years ago from a blown 351 that was in a 1986 F250HD. It was a carbed motor.

I now have a 1996 F350 with the 351.

Is there any differences between the '86 versus '96 351 truck heads? Is one better than the other? If I ever have issues with the heads on my '96, can the '86 heads be used without issue?

so i asked the above question 3 years ago out of curiosity, but now it looks like i may in fact need to use the 86 heads on a 96 motor.

so i'm hoping for some answers. thanks.

86 heads have massive combustion chambers so while they will bolt on the motor will have lower static compression and therefore less power.

so what year range 351 motor would be appropriate for the 86 heads?

and what year range heads would be appropriate for a 96 351 motor?

Virtually any head from a 302-351w will bolt on and work, E7 heads found on most 302-351w from late 80's to 96 are a good choice and easy to find. A good upgrade is gt40 heads found on 93-95 mustang cobras or some late model explorers

I believe gt 40's from the explorer will need explorer exhaust manifolds .

None.. whatever you get in scrap is all they're worth.

GT40s from a '96-'97.5 Explorer/Mountaineer, just have to bore out the bolt holes to 1/2 inch, and any Ford truck manifold or aftermarket header will fit.

Trick Flows.... lol...

but yeah GT40s are a decent upgrade for a stock engine... will work with stock manifolds or headers..

Gt40p's require special headers..
