clicking and hesitation

I seriously doubt that the engine is toast if it has been well-maintained. It is probably only a third of the way though its useful life. Do a search on here for "cam phaser" or "variable cam timing" and you will get many hits that MAY explain what is ticking. Another more simple cause could be the clutch on the AC compressor.

The hesitation could be several things other then the engine. I agree with DMAC it is probably not time for a new engine unless something has been neglected. Even then there is a guy on here who got a truck from his father that had not had an oil change in 180,000 miles and was still running.
When was the last time you flushed the transmission and put in a new filter/
What about a fuel filter have you changed that? It could be blocked and causing the hesitation.
As for the ticking most likely the cam phasers which isn't a major problem most llikely but is annoying.
Anyway check back with us if you need some more help.
