'Lizzie' our 65 Merc MT 750 6x6
Hi all - First Post
Just thought I would introduce 'Lizzie' our 65 Merc MT750 6x6. She was a special order when new in 65 and upfitted with a 6x6
conversion by Coleman. The original purchaser was BC Hydro - our provincial utility company. She was in service with them until
1981, at which time she was 'disposed' of at auction and sold to a local logging company. The logging co got rid of her original box
(probably a 'swiss army knife' type service box with multiple winches, crane, giant auger, etc.) and replaced it with a flat deck from
some other truck. They then strapped on a large tank, and put her to work as a water truck. As I'm sure some of you know, logging
co water trucks don't usually do much work, they just get moved around from site to site in case of fire. So Lizzie mostly sat around
in the forest and got rusty until the logging co decided to 'dispose' of her at auction in 2005. My Bro's hand was the last one in the
air when the hammer went down at $800 bux. We have not had the time to do much with her beyond a tune up and a few minor
repairs, but are intent on making improvements (restoring?) her as time permits. Also, we are not intimately familiar with the 'big
truck' type of engineering built into Lizzie and are looking forward to learning more and sharing more on this here new 'Large' forum
For Starters:
Original 391 FT 4bbl w/ 5sp trans
Rockwell T-226 transfercase (1974 rebuild tag on it)
Looks like front axle is made by rockwell? (9000 lb?) (although Coleman did the conversion, it is not a Coleman front axle)
Tandem rear I'm guessing is Eaton? (has interlocking rears)
Sticker on dash says it is equipped with a Detroit Locker (model# J-135), but no indication of what axle has it
Hydraulic brakes w/ some sort of air assist
GVW - 37,000 lbs
- Lizzie's new guardians

First I'll say welcome to FTE. Glad to have you hanging around. Especially since you're a big truck guy. And I mean BIG truck! That's a great looking old Coleman conversion, and on a Merc at that. I love its Dayton to Budd wheel adapters. I'd love to see additional pics of them, front and rear, as well as of the Coleman underside.
