I have been running shell rotella T in my 6.9 since i got it and am having some engine problems. I would like your opinions on the brands of oil used.

 

I have used shell rotella 15w40 and have had great luck, there are still good oils out there. For example, Cheveron Delo, Mobil delavac, valvoline, etc. I buy shell because of its popularity and it is the cheapest. Hope this helps!

 

You forgot to mention, what kind of engine troubles, are they oil related problems, how often do you change oil and filter?

 

Excessive knocking and black smoke. I change my oil and filter every 3k miles and so did the owner before me. Oil pressure still seems good.

 

Your black smoke is cause from too much fuel, oil smoke is usually blue. As for engine problems the oil pressure would be very low if you had a bad rod bearing. I have had good luck with shell oil.

 

Don, Rotella is one of the most used brands of oil for the diesel engine. For years when you went into the truckstops, rotella was the oil of choice. They kept other brands, but just a few gallons compaired to the hundreds of rotella.

This was a personal observation of mine, nothing else implied.

Hey Don, I agree with some of the other responses you've gotten on this question. Rotella 15w40 is a great oil for diesels. Shell and Texaco are both owned by a company called Equilon Lubricants. Shell makes Rotella, Texaco makes URSA Super Plus 15w40 HMMMMMM! Basically though Don, most major oil companies make a 15w40 for diesels, most major oil companies have a good reputation and all of their oils have codes on the bottles that say what specifications they meet or exceed. Go with the best price you can find on a good quality name brand that you trust.
