manual transmission whine

My 92 f350 diesel manual transmission has a whine. I recently replaced the oil with ATF as specified. Has anyone used gear oil instead with good results and is it OK. I am thinking of trying it - maybe quieter?
Thanks

I've heard a lot of people running a thicker gear oil to quieten it down with no ill effects but I'm not sure what weight.

I have the Mazda 5 speed in my truck. I changed the ATF and put in 5w-30 with a quart of Slick50. It shifts better. I think the only way you could put gear oil it would have to be synthetic.
