Radiator applications, 73- 390 Rad into a 77 w/a 400
Hi guys, I have a 77 150 4x4 with a 400 4 speed. My father in law gave me his 73- 250- 2wd camper special with a 390 he bought new in 73. I have to go pick up this truck yet.
Can I use his radiator with all my 400 hoses, Is it the same?
I want to know if I need to find another one.
Thanks,
Old 4x4
I know enough to know that I dont know enough!

I took a rad/front clip from a 78 250 with a 400 and it was a direct fit, hoses, cores, mounts and all for the 390 I was running.
Funny story behind it, I asked the local Carquest counterman, a big Ford guy, about getting a hose to fit it. Told him this combination, and he just gets all pissy and say he can't look that up and I would have to get a bunch of measurements for him before he can do anything.
I go to the neighboring town's Carquest, and the counter guy there says, "well, lets look at it this way" and looks up both the 78 400 hose, and the 75 360 (highboy) hose, and gee, they were the same part number!!!! I don't have many kind words for the local parts house... Now that I am a parts sale person, I remember how I was treated by both, and try to be the second guy.

What are the measurements of the two radiators?
There are two different radiator (core) supports!
The radiator support used with the Super Cooling (S/C) radiator has a larger opening radius, than the radiator support for a non S/C radiator.
If the 1973 has the S/C radiator and your truck has the same radiator, you're good to go.
If the 1973 has the S/C radiator, but your truck does not, you will have to trim your present radiator support to allow the S/C radiator to fit...and cool properly.
Here's the info...
1973/76 F100/350 360/390 & 1977/79 F100/350 400 ~ Both with Super Cooling radiators: 24 11/16" high x 26 1/4" wide.
1977/79 F100/350 400 (NON Super Cooling) Radiator: 19 3/4" high x 26 1/4" wide.
As you can see, the S/C radiator is about 5" taller.
