Ash removal from DPF

Do the Ford DPFs collect ash over a period of time that needs to be cleaned out? If so, what is the trigger to determine when the DPF needs to be cleaned. Is the clean out a manual process involving removing the DPF?

I assume ash (non-combustable) cleaning is different from thermal regeneration that burns the soot collected in the DPF so it will pass thru the filter during regeneration.

Good Question

I would think that it would burn it up enough to blow the remains out during regen. Although Ive never actually seen any of the supposed white smoke that it said to come out during regen.

The ash will build up over time as what does not go out the tail pipe will eventually fill the dpf.

Once the dpf is full it will have to be changed. Suppose to be around 150,000 but no one has gotten there yet.

You can't blow it out?

The buildup is from the ash in the engine oil so if you burn oil you will need to clean the DPF sooner. The new CJ rated oils contain half the ash of previous oils. Filters will need cleaning by reverse flow of high-pressure air in a machine designed for the task--a process that takes about an hour and a half. This cannot be required in fewer than 150,000 miles.
