Remove oil pan on 88 4.9

I have done this with my '96 300,If you have an engine lift you may not have to block the mounts, but it's good insurance. Most lines will reach but you may want to remove air cleaner hoses, just watch everything as you lift. You will have to remove your oil pump with the pan dropped down.Felpro makes a great gasket, all neoprene one piece, with little plastic studs for each corner to hold gasket in place on engine, pan slips right on these and stays so you can get bolts in,then just screw the studs out and finish. Now is the time to put in a new Melling type iron oil pump,if you don't,later when you have to,you will wish you had.It also is good for your bearing life.ALWAYS disconnect your negative battery cable befor you start. This insures you won't destroy any electronics by disconnecting them and you won't get accidental shorts will your working.Do not jack up on the pan, mine was rusty and just started to cave in,I don't know why they even put that method in the Haynes manual!Don't forget to clean your oil pick-up and the paper gaskets that come with the pump alone are just fine,no goop.Try to torque those oilpump bolts if you can,and don't forget to prime your pump in motor oil before you put it in.I can't stress enough replacing oil pump.I bought a '91 that had just had the pan replaced and I had to replace the pump because the pick-up was plugging up,guess who R&R'd the pan again? These Ford pans are noted for rusting out, don't use a bone yard pan,pay the bucks for a good aftermarket pan,not Ford.
