I have the same problem. Sometimes I have to turn the engine off to get it to go in any gear. What could this be?

I have a 92 F150 with the 302 5 sp that I bought last oct. It has been hard to get into gear too. I drained the trans. fluid and put in new synthetic fluid. Works many times better. Just an idea to try.

Ya, i could say that there is a possibility that the original owner put, or his shop put gear oil or some other heavy oil in the trans. That would cause it to be harder to shift all the time. I know put a little 10w-40 in mine because it takes out some of the slop.

There is also a good chance that the master or slave is failing. If you park the truck and pump the clutch pedal several times with the engine off, then look through the inspection port on the trans for a drip of brake fluid from the slave. If no drip i'd try the master 1st. If it is leaky, your gonna have to pull the trans. And if thats the case, replace everything including clutch, slave and master while your there. They can cause each other to fail.

Good Luck!

It sounds like the clutch isn't releasing completely. As other posters have said it could be a problem with the master or slave cylinders. Check the fluid level and try bleeding the system before tearing everything apart. The hydraulic system uses brake fluid and the transmission uses ATF.

I was told it could possibly be the throw bearing (baring??), does that sound correct?

Look at the firewall where the master cyl mounts ,is it flexing when you step on the clutch or cracking? this is a very common problem with Fords,i belive ford makes a reinforcement plate to fix this problem.

I doubt it's the throwout bearing. That doesn't sound right at all.

Please answer this question.
The fuild in the tranny was good, when the problem started i put synthetic in to see if it would fix the issue so it was fresh tranny fluid in there.

I took it to the shop today and it turns out it was the clutch. New clutch kit installed, they had to do something with the fly wheel because it was worn out??? new trans mounts, and i had them replace those 3 black plugs on the tranny that always leak with metal ones. All in all $1200cdn + tax...~!~!! FML!

Thanks to everyone who responded and tried to help me out, I really appreciate it!
