The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together.
The solder breaks down, gas seeps in, the float slowly settles to the bottom of the tank.

NumberDummy,
Thanks for the info! I'll call that shop in New Mexico to see how much it is. I'm fairly sure it's pooched - here is a pic: Pictures by zenmaster2009 - Photobucket
scroll down on the left to my album "gas tank sending unit " and have a look...I'm still waiting to hear back from the rad shop out here as to the cost of cleaning the old tank. It's pretty bad, and I may have to buy a new one. That's going to put a big dent in the budget, I'll bet.
Thanks for taking the time,
John

For some reason mine will only read up to a 1/2 tank when full. With the sender out it reads the entire range, and the float has been replaced. The replacement float was from lmc and wider that the older one by about 1/2" or so, could it be getting hung up and not going all the way to the top of the tank? There is not a lot of room at the top (narrow).

Mine is worse than toast, it's gone!
So I just bought a truck, discovered the gas smell was coming from a missing fuel sender, and can't seem to find a replacement. Or I have found too many that "say" they are the right part, but look different.
I have a 71 f-350, with an in-cab behind-seat tank, that holds at least 15 gallons (i've put that much in it). The hole where the fuel sender unit was is about 2 inches across and has 5 screw holes around it.
Anyone have any ideas what I am missing? I looked at the C1TZ-9275-KR part photos online and it looks like it might be right.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Richard

Yeah, that's pooched all right. Time to cruise yards looking for parts, or hit the classifieds here and at FORDification.com - The 1967-1972 Ford Pickup Resource
I used to use a hardware store yardstick as a fuel gauge...way cheap and it never fails to read accurately.

Tank sending unit
Bottom line: a $39 part that is NOT OEM but works great and is delivered quickly.
Good luck,
Joe

No such thing as C1TZ-9275-KR .. the add-on R is a repro parts sellers 'made up' part number, prolly refers to: Reproduced.

One might find the DOTZ-9002-A tank in 1961/69's, as Ford replaced the tank used in these trucks with this tank in 1970 for use as a service part replacement.
