what transmission

a friend an i helped clean out an old shop and we found this transmission. both of us looked at each other with a weird face. this transmission is a ford automatic, but it has the 460BB type bellhousing that bolts on with 4 bolts like the 4 speed manuals do. we have no clue what transmission it is. the only thing i have found that compares to it is the fordomatic. can anyone else guess as to what this transmission is? i wished we would have saved it so i could take pics of it.

Are you saying that it's an automatic with a detachable bellhousing? Are you sure it wasn't a side loading manual (no shift tower on top)?

Look on the top of the transmission case for a Ford ID number, post it here.

Examples: B7AP-7006-A / CODP-7006-A / D4OP-7006-A.

it looks just like the one here but has the 351/400M and 429/460 bellhousing

No pics. No numbers. No more transmission. What is it you are asking? And whatever it is, does it matter?

Look up the word "moot".

the main point of this thread was to see if anyone else might of had a clue as to what the transmission was. me and my friend had no clue and he spotted the big block bellhousing on it and wondered what it was and so did i.

You know, I've seen things in passing many times and have wondered what it was, for no other reason than to know, As I'm sure many of you have!

Whats wrong with trying to satisfy ones curiosity...

Why should one be ridiculed for trying to educate or satisfy their curiosity.

If you were, maybe thats why you are!

For he who asks, is wiser, than he who does not!

-Enjoy

Just to up my post count, I checked on the FMX trans. Used '68 to '81, it could have been factory installed behind a 335 or maybe even 385s. Numberdummy would know for sure. It resembles the pic you posted, and the main clue is the 4 bolt bell to trans pattern. The pics here blow up if you click on them for a better view.

Ford FMX transmission

I tried to go back on the "girl" post and add a few so you wouldn't think I'm such an A--hole. I am, but I didn't want you to think it. I was not able to add them on edit, so now I know...

I try to go after 0 answer posts that have been there for a while, and trans ID posts. It makes me feel important.

FWIW, you didn't let a national treasure get past you. Good trans, but the C6 gets all the attention.

So, and I'll buy.

FMX = 14 trans pan bolt holes, first introduced in passenger cars in late 1968.

Used behind 351C/351M/351W/400's installed in passengers cars, 1973/77 F350's with the 300 I-6.

3 speed Ford-O-Matics didn't use a modulator valve, so that eliminates that puppy.

Dual range 3 speed transmissions used a modulator valve.
