I have a 2008 job 3 truck that had EGR replaced at 50,000miles,left my stranded in the bush 100miles from anywhere, pissed me off bad.Now have 102,000miles on mostly highway and lots of towing. Own 2 trailers. I have an extended warranty but next year when I buy a 2012 the first thing I will do is chip and delete, in retrospect I should have saved the money on the warranty, and spent it on a tuner.

The fuel doesn't completely burn and exits into the exhaust creating 'wet' deposits on the valve stems, etc. and into the EGR if flowing. Most the early models had EGR active at idle; I think most cut it off at idle now days.
One of the claims for diesel fuel additives is better burn, less soot, less EGR problems.........

Buddy of mine with the identical truck I have except his is Job 2, mine's a 1. He was driving along, temp gauge pegged quickly, engine sputtered and died. He states that there was no warning what so ever.
Towed to dealer, EGR cooler blew, filled #8 cylinder with coolant. I'm told the dealer is sending the engine to Ford.
Now, this buddy of mine is very difficult to trust. Took him 5 months to figure out what the puddle of water under the left front was, you know, the leaky radiator most of us went through. So I don't know if he truly had no warning and I don't know enough about the EGR system to know if it is capable of filling a cylinder with coolant.
Anybody know about this? Any tips to watch for, any advanced warning if this could happen to any of us? His 6.4 is stock and has about 60K on it, lots of average towing weights.
